Not a thing related to cycling, I may have reached peak kit. Though I do need some cleats fo a pair of winter bootees so that might involve pedals periodically I think about a pair of touring pedals flat on one side and mountain bike spd on the other for my winter road bike as the spds that are on it are a bit cheap, though getting them off the bike might be tricky. Shall pop up to EBC shop shortly.

    "peak kit".

I've read that a few times now, still don't understand.

    There's always something I didn't know I needed.

I've definitely reached peak kit and maybe even peak bike. Nothing bike related for me this Chrimbo, though in early December I did pick up a leather saddle and some lights in the Planext X sale, so maybe that was my wafer thin mint moment.

For 2017 I shall focus on wittling down the cycle stable, and maybe even getting rid of some of my accumulated kit.

chdot - We could get Mike Burrows to come up to EdFoC.
Now he's got a book out it could work well.

I got a second hand copy of Cyrano de Bergerac's Oeuvres comiques, galantes et littéraires and a Terry's Chocolate Orange. Frugal tastes.

Not quite at peak kit, but getting closer.

I got a bottle of this, a pair of bamboo socks with bicycles on them and Tim Moore's book on Cycling the Iron Curtain, which I'm looking forward to getting stuck into.

I've been avoiding getting a Smartphone because I want to keep my internet addiction in check. I have a basic mobile.

However I would like a pocket camera and a portable recording device. I told friends that, and they said, Get a Smartphone. I asked the likely price from a pal, and when he told me, I looked despondent as I'm broke at the moment.

I was totally amazed when I opened a small box of what I thought would be chocolates from this pal and he'd given me a Samsung Galaxy S4! So welcome to the second decade of the twenty-first century.

I just got a delayed present of Phil McKane's 'Mountain Biking Scotland - Wild Trails Vol 2' and some new slippers. Chalk and cheese indeed.

Sorry to hear that a fellow dumbphone user has bitten the smartdust. I'll be standing alone soon.

@IWARTS - Not quite alone. My sister hasn't even got a mobile. As she travels a lot her family are always presenting her with Ipads and mobiles which she promptly drops and breaks.

When we travel together I then become Chief Communications Officer so can do magic things like calling up our accommodation to unlock the door...

Theoretically you can use a smartphone to spend less time on the Internet, not more. For instance if you're always opening up the laptop just to check for emails and then bingo, four hours have passed, you can use the phone to reassure yourself there's nothing urgent that needs your attention, and go out and do something more interesting instead. If you get that to work for you, let me know...

These days, I suspect not having a mobile at all is a bit of a power move, as it means people have to arrange their lives around you

@Sally - My sister's lack of a mobile phone means she can't be harassed by her students. She also throws anyone out texting in her class.

I'm not on Facebook. You just stop existing to a certain extent, which hasn't bothered me yet.

Not on Facebook, generally take days to respond to non critical emails, tend not to answer the phone to anybody unless its an expected call or immediate family. People seem to still keep in touch with me despite it all. Its very easy to get trapped by the 'always available' expectation when you have a smart phone. I need to browse CCE and BROL less too!

Except when people used to spend 6 hours a day watching drivel on TV like Eastenders instead

Tassimo which is vaguely cycling related in that it makes coffee. The pods can be recycled and there is a church near Glasgow Botanic Gardens which will take them so I'll be able to cycle there with a big bag of pods.

Stylophone, yes they still exist, which might drive everyone else in the house out on a bike. I can connect it to the computer or iPad and use it with Garage Band. Management called a halt to my experimentation yesterday when I had a keyboard set for bag pipes and bossanova rhythm then played Jingle Bells on it.

Kids got a PS4 (big brother) and drum kit (Santa) so I got myself a book about drumming… see above on clearing the house of people.

Book of harmonica music. Seeing a theme here.

Madness Nutty Dad t-shirt. At least they sound good.

I was in London for a few days last week. The Science and Natural History museums will once more keep a Brompton for you. I was in Natural History to see Dippy for one last time before it goes on tour. They charged £2.50 for the Brompton which was a much better deal than using the underground to get there… in more ways than one. Portrait Gallery in Trafalgar Sq will keep them for 50p but I was with a member so it was free. Saw where the Westbourne flows into the Thames. I thought it was a canal so I looked it up and found it was the end of the river.

On the Facebook thing. I was at the Portrait Gallery to meet two people who I'd only known via the internet before that. One of them had some Brompton bits for me. I took them some Arran Cheese. We had a lovely lunch which would never have happened but for the internet. It's not all cat movies.

I received my first foray into cardio training with a HRM watch.

I also received a rather nice Altura softshell jacket.

My kids bought me a LEGO fun in the park set which include a bike.

I got a very nice teapot from Pekoe Tea - which is exactly what I wanted! Only it was accidentally the too small size, so probably off to upgrade today (and hopefully not bankrupt myself with buying nice teas to put in it).

(I also got my visiting sister's horrible cold. She really shouldn't have...)

A set of CandBSeen lights for my Brompton (long overdue).

@WFB - there was a truly terrible Christmas song being played everywhere in La Gomera which appeared to be Feliz Navidad sung to the tune of Jingle Bells, possibly with a bossa Nova beat, so you may be onto something there. Playing it on a bagpipes setting would possibly have improved it...

You can miss out on ride invitations but that's about it.

I got a breadboard with a laser-etched bicycle design; Lost Japan by Alex Kerr; Lenin is on the Train by Catherine Merridale (cf Tim Moore's The Cyclist who Went Out in the Cold which visits the same area but from the other end of Soviet history); The World of Edena by Moebius (clever little brother chose that); a screen print of what I think is a view of Lochnagar and a VR headset.

I had my mum staying for nine days after she broke her wrist so, like those awful car ads, I feel I deserve these things.

I got a cycling related t-shirt aimed at people much younger, hipper and fitter than me. I wore it to please the children but felt very silly.

On the matter of facebook - it is indeed a horrendous procrastination activity which I mainly use to keep distant relatives up to date with useless information, but it does come good occasionally in organising things - the ride to Roseburn event for example was quite widely shared and I think exploited social media quite well.
