There is a Transport Infrastructure Conference at the hotel in 2017 and it I suspect that the connection to a fast and pleasant way to get from Haymarket Station to the event perhaps even on a on a hired bike, might be slightly scuppered by the climb out via the steps (up to the A90).

Could anyone offer some photos/or comment on the best step free alternative route?

Both Abellio and Nextbike might tak tent o this?

Ride past to the Craigleith Y junction. Take the right fork, and the right turn to the road where you can turn right and back upto the main Queensferry Road and over at the lights to the Hotel.

Or come off at Ravelston Dykes where there's a ramp up rather than steps, go right on the road then take the first right to Craigleith Crescent which takes you down to the Holiday Inn. Or, from that same junction, you can cut through to Craigleith View and onto Craigleith Crescent from there.
