Beryl Miles, spokesperson for the West of England Road Safety Partnership said: “When it’s going to be icy, we would urge cyclists to listen to weather forecasts and avoid cycling in frozen conditions."
Couldn't she urge local authorities to listen to weather forecasts and grit cycle-paths in frozen conditions?Posted 14 years ago # -
Would the sensible thing to do in that type of weather not be to grit the major bus routes and advise all road users to take the bus.

They don't do minor roads round the houses. Once I'm on the main road it should be fine.
Last week I hit a van on ice. He had skidded too and didn't seem bothered.

My frame barely takes 25c Armadilloes so I don't think I'd have any room for any studded tyres, so will use my wife's step-through hybrid if it gets really skiddy. Has anyone ever used studded tyres? What are they like on an un-iced bit of road, or across a metal drain cover?

After some discussion here (http://citycyclingedinburgh.info/bbpress/topic.php?id=1280) earlier in the year, I now have a pair of Marathon Winter tyres with studs sitting in the loft and ready to go on the bike. This might be a job for later in the week... They come with stern instructions that they must be 'run in' for 25km on tarmac before going onto ice, in order to bed the spikes in properly.
I believe that the grip on tarmac and hard surfaces is unaffected by the spikes, as they sink into the tyre so that the rubber hits the road.
You can be sure that I will publish my findings on here once I've tried them.
