    As I was saying -

"to deal with the fact that they are not competent to drive in these conditions!"

I just tested my wife's fatter-tyred hybrid up and down the street. Definitely grippier, but the frame's too small, the weighting's all wrong, the cranks are too short and I can't find the pannier without heading into the loft. Either walking in again tomorrow or trying it with let-down skinny tyres.

We've been trying to organize a taxi to the airport and failing. they're either not taking bookings, or fully booked.

    Airport?

It's that place that they park all the planes when there's been a bit of snow :)

Yeah well, my poor mother is desperate to get home and the airline keeps insisting that the flight is on schedule, even when the airport is closed....very trying.

Good luck SRD. Room on the back of my bike for 1, I'm only heading as far as the Gyle though!

  12. I'm working from home today. Just not worth the hassle. Plus the chicken run roof collapsed last night and I want to make sure my repairs are holding up.

But my new Autosocks arrived as well (ordered before the snow, then the snow delayed delivery!) so planning on fitting them at lunchtime and seeing how they perform. If they do well I'm going to drop them a line telling them they need to develop a bike version!

Autosocks - must be the ultimate in 'counter-intuitive'.

Cover the tread with something that looks smooth and???

Many local bus routes are affected by the continued overnight snowfall. Lothian Buses have made a dedicated landing page on their website for route updates.

Parts of the city bypass are down to one lane this morning. Edinburgh Airport's website says it will be shut until 6pm today. The Scotsman report todays that owner BAA recently invested £1m in snow-clearing equipment.

I know, bizarre concept, but various car manufacturers endorse them and there are some interesting write-ups. Plus they appear to be incredibly easy to fit. I guess I'll find out later today and report findings!

Years ago my mum had a sticky blue rubbery fabric thing for providing extra grip for getting lids off jars. No idea what it was made of but I often think of it in slidey conditions.

    "Tram Tracks"

I went from Charlotte Square to Lothian Road yesterday and wondered whether it was at all 'safe' to ride along PS with the gutter snow and impatient buses/taxis.

    Didn't fancy finding out...

    Hope your bike's OK.

Time to cycle to work yesterday, the quick way, including about half a mile of pushing through the residential roads and falling off a few times: 19 minutes.

Time to cycle work today, the longer way, using only the main road into and then out of town: 37 minutes.

It's so simple: the problem must be all the cars! Saw plenty of loafs of snow today, too, and someone whose lights and indicators were covered.

I have a friend who has autosocks (for a Mazda RX8, so he's fighting a losing battle in my opinion). He says they have worked well in the past but are a pain to fit. I saw them in action on Sunday.

We were on the west coast at the weekend hill walking (some entertaining cycling into the hills on semi-slicks, but that's another story).
Only just made it back to Dunblane where I had left my car which was now buried under 18" of snow. After a little digging I was able to get out without too much bother, even plouging 3" off the snow surface.

Left the car on the main road and walked back to find friend still struggling to get the Autosocks on. They did seem to improve traction quite a bit, but he still needed four people to push him out.

Should be easier to fit to the front wheels as the steering will help you.

wondered whether it was at all 'safe' to ride along PS

I think PS would have something to say about that!

    I was significantly slowed today, the road condition yesterday was a thin covering of pretty wet slush, today it was a much thicker cover of dry, powedery, frozen slush. Much slower going. At least offered a bit more traction that icy stuff on Monday. Road generally quiet however ride and my morning completely ruined by 2 eejits;

Private hire car 667 (or 677) approaching Western Corner. Passed me incredibly slowly with less than an inch to spare. Gave his wing a beating with my gloved fist as a warning. He got past me, pulled across me and hit the brake lights then carried on. I caught him at the lights, got alongside and tapped his passenger window. He rolled down the back window to "talk". Must have thought that I was goign to lob a snowball in or something! I remonstrated loudly with him, asked him what he thought the white stuff on the road was and if he thought that was an appropriate way to pass me. His defence was "you were pulling across me", which really set me off - I asked him what he thought I was cycling down and if he thought I was going to slide around in the pile of frozen slush of follow the tire tracks. If the tyre tracks moved out, so would I, it's not brain surgery. He wound up his window and went on when the lights changed.*

What could only be described as a monster truck at Maybury roared passed me off the line at the lights, pulled across and then proceeded to power-slide it's way up the incline to Gogar roundabout past Comet, leaving weaving tyre tracks across the road. Couldn't get his number plate as the whole thing was thoroughly car-caked.

    * note - language thoroughly moderated. I'm not proud of the sailor speak I resorted to, but in the heat of the moment like that it is adrenaline talking.

    Ah...

Yes I've done the same, put it down to shock/fear - suppose that is adrenaline.

bike is hack bike, bike was ok, twisted the handle bars back into place, shook the slush off when I got into the bike shed alongside one other bike, another arrived behind me, less bikes there today than Monday which was a far worse day

One other bike at my work (+1 abandoned). Chap had been running in the last few days but decided it was time to get back in the saddle. We're having a contest to see who breaks first and opts for 4-wheeled transport.

for the most part, they're not! Perhaps 25-33% of colleagues have made it.

Aye, the instructions say they are much more difficult to fit to rear wheel drive cars, so I'm hoping it's easy enough on mine. Definitely got the conditions to test them properly.

Well, I am currently free of snow, but I certainly couldn't be described as a safe route to work...
