Mudguard fixings - unborking the borked

    I fitted some Stronglight E-Type mudguards to replace a rather battered SKS affair, held together with elastic bands, zip ties and electrical tape (the old ones certainly helped the 'shabby chic'/it-isn't-worth-stealing vibe).

    Unlike every other set of guards I've owned, the stays fix to the guard blades via a small plastic widget called a Mix Clip, held on by a small screw. Despite screwing them down as tight as possible, all four clips on the rear guard lasted two minutes over cobbles this morning.

    Worse, no-one in the UK appears to sell these and while in Germany they cost only 1 Euro a pop, the 9 euros required to post them rather defeats the purpose.

    I'm thinking the rubbery, strappy, plasticky U-shaped piece from a set of SKS Raceblades would work well....but you can't get those either. Short of industrial-strength outdoor tape, I'm stumped as to how I can repair the guards. Given they've been on for less than 50 miles, I'm extraordinarily loathe to chuck 'em.

    Any suggestions?

    Can you re-use the mudguard stay bracket and bolts from your SKS pair? It's usually entirely possible to poke a couple of holes in the mudguard and zip tie the bracket on.

    The workshops in bike shops sometimes have spares knocking about.

    My Stronglight other-type-with-metal-mounts didn't make it out of the house on my singlespeed, never mind over any cobbles.
    Sounds like you need a tootle through the random-fixing-drawers of something like a Bike Station to find some adaptable metal mounts, unless you just want it over with quickly in which case SJS are probably best.

    I'm liking the adaptation route - the brackets from the SKS guards were borked but might be revived. I'll post some pics this evening.

    There are 'new' drawers at the temporary BS (other end of the yard) but much less full/varied.

    OK, so to resurrect my own thread...

    I attempted to make a loop over the top using inner tube, a bit like the clip on road bike guards (crud racers?). That didn't work.

    I resorted to copious swathes of 'T-Rex tape (great stuff btw) to hold them together where the mixclips had gone wrong, which did work, but looked terrible. Although the bike itself looks like it's done hard labour, I have some vestiges of pride and caved in when I found some Contec guards on Planet X.

    Yes, once bitten, twice shy...the Stronglight E-Type monstrosities came from PX...but a fiver (OK, 8.99 when you include the postage). Still cheaper than Decathlon's bargain SKS guards.

    The Contec guards look like basic SKS affairs - no branding, nothing fancy but they use traditional eye bolts and normal-looking stays. Better still, the stays are almost exactly the right length out of the box! Took me half an hour to fit - I would've been quicker still if I hadn't been doing it by the light of our pend light which is motion sensitive...

    All's well that sort of ends well. The Stronglight guards will be kept and fettled later.

    Very wise to run the commute with mudguards all year round. I might look at mudguard flaps that stay on or can be fixed back on in future times. Such is my belief in the essential nature of mudguards and now mudguard flaps

    A boring bike question.

    The front mud guard broke on my bike when it crashed , It has sks 35mm cromo plastic with clips made specifically for my bike a 2015 revolution country explorer. When I look in the bike shops the SKS have different connectors. Could I buy SKS mudguards and fit the old connectors? The old connectors are made to measure for the bike
