Interesting discussion on radio 4 "You and Yours" today about 10 minutes in about the positives and negatives of this 50 year old. One elderly town planner shows they don't all have to be like Smart of Roseburn.
One of the original planning team, Michael Edwards, was very positive about the idea of building large new towns which he claimed would do a lot to ease the housing crisis. The new idea of Garden Cities are misconceived because they will only increase the dependence on car commuting. However he said the implementation of the original MK plans had turned it into a far too car-centric place, with the unlimited speed restrictions making it impossible to develop local communities within the new town where local shops and services could be provided, which had been the original vision.
