I've cycled up the slip road (heading northish) once, because Pedal for Scotland was coming the other way. I can't remember how we got onto the Queensferry Road - presumably further back than Crammond, given that we were avoiding PfS. I don't remember any issues, but that doesn't mean much in the present context.

Do many pedestrians use the bridge?

Going UP the sliproad isn't the main* problem.

Coming DOWN (into oncoming traffic) is the problem.

For peds there are bus stops on both sides which could generate some foot traffic and no pavement on the sliproad.

It's the fact that it could be a long time before anything is done on the bridge that means that even if it is only a handful a day the numbers will soon mount up and it only needs 1 chancing their arm...

    * going up for confident/fit cyclists is okay but I wouldn't want to be a novice puffing & panting up the hill constantly looking over your shoulder for fast moving traffic.

Good point about the bus stops. I had forgotten them.
I agree with what you are saying about the slip road.

"Good point about the bus stops"

Was wondering if they were still in use and whether anyone walking 1 1/2 miles to/from...

At least locals will know about the underpass (unlike CEC).

    Just come over it!

Seems it might not be shut shut until Friday.

Probably only got over because cyclist turned up when I happened to be there and was confronted with apparently closed bridge -

'But there are no signs, I have to at a primary school in 15 minutes.'

    Someone opened a gate.

(Because there was someone there who could.)

Yesterday I said slip road was 40mph.

    I was WRONG!

It's 40 at that point on the other carriageway going into Barnton.

FoI the report or engineer's advice that says it's unsafe to stand on but perfectly safe to stand under?

Something isn't adding up without all the information.

That is unless the deck is going to be physically removed soon.

    Tweet from Cllr Work

Although underpass is council, MOD are putting block on use for national security reasons as it enters their land, will contact MOD and ask

    well the fence is up

and what a statement it makes

cuts a serious mid-eighties belfast vibe

as permanent as a temporary fence can get

all thats missing is the barbed wire hoops

but lets not give em ideas eh

I've had the message below from the Council's Bridges Team about the reasons for the closure. It would appear that the centre span (or possibly the entire bridge) is to be removed and the whole bridge then replaced and/or refurbished, though timescale will depend on a study now underway. The message is purely about the bridge, not the diversion, but hopefully Cllr Work's investigations will get more info on the diversion.

"The Burnshot bridge was inspected in late 2016 and found to be in very poor condition, which is why it was closed to all traffic in December in the interests of public safety.

Despite signs advising that the bridge is closed, some pedestrians and cyclists have continued to use it. Fencing is now in place to reinforce the bridge’s closure. We recognise this will be an inconvenience as it will require a long diversion, however public safety is absolutely paramount.  Please note that although the gates may be open at present they will be closed and locked this week.

We’re currently doing a feasibility study on the most effective way of refurbishing or replacing the bridge (either part of it or the entire structure). Whatever option’s chosen, it will be necessary to remove the centre span over the A90 carriageway. We don’t yet have a date for when the bridge will be able to reopen again as a programme has yet to be developed. However, funding of £1.5m has been secured for work to the bridge.

Local residents will be kept up to date with plans for work on the Burnshot bridge."

That's fine, but it's essentially economical with the truth.

Does anyone really believe that cyclists and pedestrians could be a 'final straw'?

If it's THAT fragile surely there shouldn't be traffic going under it - certainly not heavy vehicles, at speed.

    Thanks Dave.

It's a bit rich to have a go at Peds & cyclists for continuing to use it. I ignore the road closed signs on Riversdale Crescent daily because the contractor has very helpfully left a narrow gap on the road for us to access Corstorphine Road. I'm very grateful they have done this.

If they don't want us to use it then it should be fenced off AND a sensible well signed diversion in place

The national security thing is a red herring as the underpass leads to "outside the wire" - ultimately to MOD housing; people can access the housing without using the underpass, and many do in order to cross the Almond by the old bridge.

There seems to be no concern over public access to similar estates at Dreghorn and other such MOD accommodation across Scotland.

I'm not a structural engineer but my decades in construction tell me that there can't be any safety risk to pedestrians or cyclists from the state of the bridge and if there was a risk to the bridge from foot traffic then the risk from vibration caused by traffic passing below would massively exceed it,surely.

Could a temporary path over the grass down to the underpass not be laid at minimal cost and accommodated within the security concern to allow use in an inward direction? I'm sure pedestrians will walk down there anyway rather than add a mile and a half.

How can they refuse permission to use something not on their land? (yes, yes, I know they're the MOD and have loads of guns and worse, and might is right etc)

What happens if you wait at the sliproad bus stop for the Queensferry bus - do they shoot you?

Perhaps the MoD are assuming that the council are requesting access via the base

Without the full details one can not be sure.

Craigiehall will apparently be closing next year, so goodness knows what that will mean for public access via the underpass or the access road to Riverside Road, etc.

Heading west the underpass looks feasible, if nerve-wracking on the A90 between the bus stop and Burnshot Road.

Going East.....better to use an alternative route I reckon. Still think Kirkliston to A8 path is a possibility, depending on where in Edinburgh you're heading.

This will certainly cramp the style of a few Sunday club runs.

Perhaps the Council are requesting access via the base. It would save them having to shell out a few pennies to lay a temporary path beside the slip road.

its all a bit schrodinger's cat at the minute, innit?

the gate remains open/shut, exhibiting the uncertainty principle of wave-particle duality

then when you get to the bridge, the state vector collapses

adds a bit of colour to the commute

    @amir

Can I ask, were you mixing up Craigiehall and Craigie's farm?

    @acsimpson

Surely even the interregnal council would understand there are only two chances of a functioning army base (and HQ to boot) willingly opening its gates, slim and none, and slim's already left town

Had a look on strava and amongst its 'Athletes' more than 1,000 have used the bridge heading East Bound this year already...
