Quite a long way to go before realising your mistake!

I plotted this on google maps expecting some journalistic unkindness, that he'd drifted and ended up 500k off, but no, sure enough he was 500k in the exact opposite direction.

Thirty days is a long time though, must have been some crazy route. I respect his audaciousness, but he might have at least got hold of a compass.

I presume he couldn't navigate by sun nor stars due to the pollution clouds :-(

"I respect his audaciousness". As do I. Apparently though the fellow could not read a map.

Perhaps the gentleman involved was a bit simple? Lovely that he tried to get home and lovely that people helped him out when he was lost.

I thought it was a heart-warming story with a nice ending. The enormity of the error is quite amazing though.

Yeah, it was touching that the police had a whip round to buy him a train fare home.

"Perhaps the gentleman involved was a bit simple? "

Or maybe just with poor map reading skills. Anyway we shouldn't be too complacent: in this age of satnavs and smartphones there are fewer and fewer in this country who can read a map...

Cue apocryphal tales of drivers following satnav directions over cliff edges.
