There've been various discussions on here about how often to change chains and keeping them lubricated - and the best lubricants.

    Has anyone tried this -

I know one person, he was very happy with it.

They also produce products for motorbikes, so presumably the theory and execution will be better than some 'good ideas' for bicycles.

I've had a Scottoiler on my commuter/mtb for several years, and I have one on my motorbike. They are perfect for Scottish weather.

"They are perfect for Scottish weather."

So why not on current bike(s)?

Old flatmate had one for his Edinburgh commute and swore by it.

    2/3 times every ten miles!

So why not on current bike(s)?

Because it's more to add to the specification of bicycles, because in the dog-eat-dog world of chain lube formations an automatic or semi-automatic lubrication device is seen as unnecessary, and because it doesn't offer great advantages over a bottle of lube to those who cycle only in good weather, and arguably is of less benefit to recumbent bikes whose chains are generally less exposed to the road and front wheel rooster tails.

But for regular riding in bad weather, or indeed when bad weather turns to good weather and your chain has been soaked in rain and grime, then baked dry by the sun, it's a good accessory. Although you could carry a bottle of lube in a saddle pack for example, it's an installed system that requires only a squeeze of the dispenser squid.

I like this quote from the Scottoiler site

The thesis of Dr. Matthew Kidd of Herriot-Watt University found a 1% difference in efficiency between commercially available oil, wax, and grease lubricants and ordinary tap-water

The site does then go on to mention the corrosive qualities of rain water

As ruggtomcat says 2-3 times every ten miles is a fair bit of squeezing the squid

Mark Beaumont's bike that he used to go round the world has one fitted as standard.

The thesis of Dr. Matthew Kidd of Herriot-Watt University found...

I suspect that the experimental equipment used by Dr Kidd was the same as that used in an earlier PhD student's investigation into the absolute efficiency of chain transmissions.

One 'r' in Heriot, gembo! ;)

was the earlier student to become Dr Arellcat?

I just cut the quote from Scotttoiler without checking the 'r's. One of our trainees said the other day she liked the way Glaswegians rolled their 'r's. She couldn't work out why I was laughing so much
