Walking and cycling improvements on Calton Road leading to Waverley Station

We want to hear your views on a proposed shared surface on Calton Road between St Ninian’s Row and Leith Street. The aim of the proposals is to improve conditions for pedestrians and cyclists within the challenging topographical constraints of the site. Your views are important to ensure that the project meets the needs of the road users. Please complete the online survey so that we can consider your views.

Hm. Not sure about the shared surface idea. Won't stop rat-running. Junction needs to be redesigned really to force drivers to reduce speed coming from Leith Street. Might be better to make Calton Road one-way northbound rather than southbound...

The devil really will be in the detail with this one but once again concerned to see removal of pavements being proposed for a through road - one that currently has cars nearly taking off as they launch down the hill.

So, which route are cyclists heading south to go? And it doesn't address the main issue, which is that slow moving cycle traffic heading up Leith St is cut across by fast cars heading down Calton Road, which could be addressed by such traffic being directed to be in the current 'turn left only down to Omni car park' lane, further back.

"Might be better to make Calton Road one-way northbound rather than southbound..."

Will this be any more effective than the one-way from Regent Road that gets ignored? The whole junction needs a significant rework if anything is to stick.

    one-way from Regent Road

Which bit do you mean here?

It's marked Calton Hill on maps, which I always think is unnecessarily confusing, but it's the sharply-inclined cobbled street that the lorry came a-tumbling down and smashed the wall.

Thanks, I couldn't see a one way street on OSM. I've fixed that now.

There's no one way signs at the Regents Road end, as far as I'm aware. Motor vehicles are prohibited from entering from Calton Road.

I'm not convinced there was ever a TRO to make the no entry legal, I try to watch them as and when they come up

    This makes sense now, ta.

Klaxon - how long have you been watching the TROs? It's been prohibited since before 2008 apparently.

Haha, not that long. Signs gone in 2012 streetview - removed in error and not replaced until now?

I immensely dislike the use of 'no motor vehicles' in this context. Far less visual impact than 'no entry' and far more ignorance of what the sign means

"No entry" means to your average OLA motorist, "Uh oh, there might be another vehicle coming the other way and they might get all angry and beepy with me"

"Motor vehicles prohibited" means to your average OLA motorist, "Meh, they just banned cars for no reason and nothing will be there anyways, I'll just shoot through quickly while no ones watching"

Yeah, they were gone for a while. With the signs moved forward from the old No Entry and the clearer markings (and an open Calton Road...) compliance seems better now.

    Link is currently "unavailable".

I can't see the consultation from the main page, either Open or Forthcoming.
