Some tripe from our chums at the EEN to agitate the motoring mouthbreathers. The obvious point in the article is that the writer has no sense of personal responsibility.

Duff by name and duff by nature!

Also, Broughton St's outside the implemented 20mph Zone 1 (it's in zone 2) and wasn't 20mph already, so its (motor vehicle) limit is still 30mph until 28/02/17 anyway.

All that's leaving aside the non-applicability of limits to cycles, of course.

How is a cyclist meant to know how fast they are travelling? Perhaps we need a MOT-approved speed measuring device to be installed on all steeds and tested and calibrated annually,

Just as well it was a bike she stepped out in front of - doubt she would be writing anything soon (or ever again) if it had been a car.

Firstly was this person speeding if so although no speed device in my bike, I think could tell if was nearer 20 or 30mph. I had 2 speed reading things as initially had no idea what speed bike does but having got a feel would think would know within 5 mph if though going 20 don’t think would be going 30 mph. Although could not be prosecuted for speeding could be careless cycling. More than prosecution possibly does not look good if people speed excessively like running red lights it creates a bad perception may be.

She walked into the road without looking. How could she possibly have known how fast the cyclist was travelling?

So Ms Duff is basically admitting she didn't look before crossing the road. The cyclist shouted a warning, but going downhill at some pace clearly couldn't brake or avoid her in time.

As others have said had it been a car she'd be unable to write her column.

Alternative headline: "Green cross code applies to drivers and newspaper columnists too".

Looks like she taken a roasting in the comments section.

Do the usual commenteers take the day off on a Friday?

No, I think they just hate pedestrians enough to side with their other mortal enemy on this occasion.

Or maybe it was the suggestion that road users should go at 20mph that did it.

Its pretty incredible they've published an article like that. As others have said, its game over in the first two sentences.

And as jonty says, there's maybe a more collective common enemy of all road users here, commonly known as "idiots".

Astonishing the EEN still prints this guff. For a more positive view see regular and respected journalist for London Evening Standard.
