"Because the pavement LEDs, as part of a trial in the municipality of Bodegraven-Reeuwijk, told them it was safe to do so".

Has this reporter been at a busy crossing? Just because the light is green doesn't make it "safe" - the big assumption is that road users have stopped at their red.

My point entirely. Based on the assumption that all drivers are paying attention all of the time.

seems gimmicky and playing to lowest common denominator at best. what does it offer that the beeping accompanying the green man doesn't?

I suppose it may help the deaf...

It seems like a really good environmental cue rather than a discrete signal. You can probably watch the road while seeing the colour of the uplighting (either in peripheral vision or reflected off eye-height objects), which you can't do with the green man. Combine that with the cue of the beeping and I believe this could actually make it safer to cross the road.

"Smartphone use by pedestrians and cyclists is a major problem."

    Oh how we laughed.
