I'm looking for any recommendations for a removal company in the Edinburgh area. (I am not asking for myself). A proper big van will be needed, not a "one man with van" outfit. Thanks.

Used Broughton Removals 10 years ago.

Coped well with removing to a top flat (got the impression the guys doing the job hadn't been warned in advance...)

    I run Murray Moves 07989976869 http://www.murraymoves.co.uk
I can supply a large Luton van with a 1 2 or 3 man crew. For larger moves I can also do multiple runs if local or arrange a couple of vans. If it's a large removals truck you're after then you could try broughton removals / clockwork removals / Kerrs removals or fast removals in Musselburgh
    Cheers
    Murray

Would recommend Murray! He helped us move house in December.

Packs a van like he's a Tetris master.

    Cheers Murray / recombodna.
I'm pretty sure the job is bigger than the sort of thing you do - both in terms of distance and amount of stuff.

@ARobComp does that mean the van is empty by the time he has finished packing it? ;)

    No worries
Distance wise I've done removals to Paris Eindhoven Fortrose and Portobello ... but if it's a massive load over a long distance then try the companies I've listed above.

Broughton Removals left us with an expensive piano in a damp garage, having refused to take it up the steps to the house. We had made it perfectly clear what was in store for the removal guys and the guy in charge had assured us they do this all the time (move pianos up difficult steps), had all the gear and it wouldn't be a problem. I had actually cancelled a specialist piano remover because this guy had convinced me that he knew exactly what he was doing.

Once they had refused to take the piano up the stairs and the boss on the phone had basically told us to eff off, it wasn't his problem, I pulled the removal guys aside who were extremely apologetic, clearly uncomfortable with what they had been told to do, and they confirmed that the guy who runs the company will say anything to get the job, leaving them to field the angry customer and apologise.

If you are just moving standard stuff they have been great for us in the past, but I will never use them again. I don't like liars.

Some of the more hardcore forumites are now looking up this route thinking "wonder if I can cycle that in a weekend?

I used Broughton Removals ten years ago and they were fine (and even stored our stuff when something went wrong with the sale at the last minute), but that was a standard move from a small flat.

I've used Broughton 14 years ago. They weren't bad, although the guy that quoted (possibly the boss) told me that a wardrobe could be moved without dismantling.

On the day, the guys looked at it and told be to dismantle it. Seems to tie in with what @nobrakes said.

My only other issue was that they grumbled about some of the boxes I'd packed being too heavy - some of them were full of books, but only really an issue as they always insist on carrying two boxes at once. Anyway, they should give some advice up front about how they want boxes packed.

We've used Guardian for two more moves since then, and they were excellent both time. Paid for the packing service too - definitely money well spent, although you will be drowning in packing paper by the end of it (What's inside these SIX sheets of A1 sized packing sheets? Ah, a single cork coaster; well at least it's not damaged!)

I would have to second or third nobrakes and cb's experience with BR. We first used them 9 years ago for a flat move and they were fine (well, apart from a heck of a lot of grumbling about stairs and wardrobe size, etc, and a couple of broken transom panes which they got a glazier to fix).

We used them again recently for a move where some stuff was going to storage and some to our new house. We weren't precisely sure how much would be going either way but were told this didn't matter by the estimator during their visit, and got a quote on that basis. When the moving team turned up, there was a lot of phoning of their office and then we got a call saying the move would cost around twice the estimate! They had us over a barrel and they knew it so we had to pay up. To add insult to injury they have twice since tried to overcharge us for what they had in storage. Avoid like the plague.

    Thank you for all those.
We're talking the contents of a 3-bed semi detached house from the north of England to Scotland. I do think it is a full sized van job.
I'll note and pass on the feedback on Broughton Removals!

I've recently been moving flat about two miles from Sciennes to Ardmillan (almost Dalry), and with the luxury of time, have been attempting to do as much as possible by bike trailer, a trusty Bob Yak.

Remarkably successful so far and more useful than and almost as effective as time spent on turbo trainer. I may well use Murray Moves to finish off the absolutely cannot be carried by bike trailer things though.

Always sad to hear companies telling folks to F*** off I don't think I'd be in business for long with that attitude. I'll make a note of the broughton feedback. Guardian were another company I forgot to mention.

I move a lot of pianos and have only once failed to get one up the stairs...... we took it from pencaitland to Manchester where the client assured me there was a wide straight staircase..... we were greeted with a very narrow staircase with a low ceiling and 2 tight corners........ we tried but the piano had to go back to pencaitland....... nobody was told to F*** off though .. ;-)

I used Guardian to move & store my stuff & then bring it back after house renovations. Nice blokes, did a decent job & not that expensive.

I do hope I don't have to move again for a good while, but I will keep Guardian in mind based on the good feedback here!

    Thank you everyone.
DrAfternoon, I remember seeing an article about somewhere in the US where there's quite a cargo bike culture and when someone wants to move house everyone turns up with their cargo bikes and moves stuff!

Last move, I used Clockwork and they were great, also they did a Uni staff discount. They were very accommodating of waiting for a delivery of flooring at the old house for the new house and transporting that too!

@fimm - sounds like Portland. Possibly other places too, of course.
