Microsoft is donating access to it's global orthorectified aerial imagery to help OpenStreetMappers make the map even better than it already is.

As anyone who has added details to OSM will know, the aerial views are supplied by Yahoo and are not nearly as clear as Google Maps.

In addition Potlatch 2 the new improved version of OSM editor Potlatch is currently in public beta.

Data from OSM makes cyclestreets.net (plus various iPhone apps) work.

CycleStreets started out as the cycle journey planning web site for Cambridge. Edinburgh was the second main area covered, which was then rapidly expanded to cover the whole of the UK.

CS is currently looking for a (relatively) small sum of money to make this valuable service better and keep up with the increasing number of journeys being planned every day.

CyclingScotland is about to help community groups that have expressed an interest in 'mapping parties'. These will improve OSM details in their area.

It's likely to be around a week until we get the "paperwork" sorted to allow tracing from the BING imagery.

It's a lot more up to date in Edinburgh (taken this year), and has much better coverage outside of the cities than the yahoo imagery, which is around 4 years old.

    "can't make it this Friday"

    Thought you meant Critical Mass!

The Friday meeting is not mainly about OSM

meant to say changeset comments; I get an RSS feed (via OWL) of all the edit's done in the Edinburgh Area, when a new name appears I tend to check out what they've done.

But it's also interesting to see what other people have been doing, both chdot and spytfyre tend to be okay. But sometimes people put in Edit's around Edinburgh or some changes which isn't helpful.

Generally the area of Edinburgh edited and a summary of the types of changes (added, removed, tidy up) is good :)

That's nice ("tend"... I don't add stuff often enough to remember all the tools/tags.)

Bing looks like a GREAT improvement. Tried doing some things last night but web site was SO slow - don't know if changes were correct/saved!
