Can anyone recommend a solicitor in town who can certify a few docs before I pick one at random from google/yellow pages.

What sort of certification is it? If you need a notary you'll need a legal person, but for witnessing true copies you can usually just track down someone with "standing" in the community / a doctorate (recent experience confirms medical doctors not the only acceptable kind for this!).
