I'm starting a new job at Sughton House end of April, and will be commuting in from Dunbar.

My intention is to keep a bicycle at the station.

Suggestions on reasonable routes from Waverley to Saughton House gratefully received.

Are you intending to cycle between Waverley and Saughton House?

I would take a contact and start date from the organization situated there with a pinch of salt had one or two issued from them before, enough to make someone hope for independence-)

Probably best training it to Haymarket if you can. Then NCN 1 to Roseburn and Quiet Route 8 to Saughton House.

Or train to Edinburgh Park, then cycle back along the Bankhead/Broomhouse cycle path.

Thanks for the advice. Trains I'm coming in on tend to terminate at Waverley, so will probably have to negotiate Princes Street. Or bus/tram, but looking to save myself the price of a pass.

Train from Dunbar likely to terminate Waverley?

Personally I would head up Jeffrey street then down st Mary street then turn right along cowgAte, grassmarket, pubic triangle, cross Lothian road through fountainbridge, continue to ardmillan. Maybe take the right at diggers and go along Gorgie road. Bit of a shimmy to avoid Calder road roundabouts last right being after jail before stenhouse primary which I used to take the right turn at the pedestrian crossing. Often aided by lollipop person . Stenhouse path or road to saughton house.

Not brilliant. When the disused railway links fountain park to stenhouse path this will improve.

I don't like princes street but this is also a direct enough route and you could go through Haymarket to roseburn cut through roseburn park up to tram at jenners depositary and stenhouse track to saughton house. Flood defence works still blocking the park at the moment though? Again not ideal.

All doable as train bike commute but not the best until the fountainbridge link kicks in.

Thanks for all the advice. The early train from Dunbar does go through to Haymarket, so I'm liking that option at the moment. What's the capacity at Haymarket like if i decided to leave a bike there?

Adequate space and good bike racks at Haymarket next to the old station building (i.e. do not leave the station in the direction of the tram stop).

Thanks fimm, I'll swing into Haymarket today fr a look.

Gembo, those train times above are for leaving Waverley. From Haymarket it is 1726 and 1759.

Of course i can always change at Waverley going between Dunbar and Haymarket.

  15. I go Princes Street past Saughton House 2-3 days a week.

Its an easy straightforward route, with Haymarket being the only spot where a nervous cyclist might be better walking past the station to Haymarket yards where it then gets very quiet.

I'd be happy to buddy up a few times for you to get used to it all.

Definitely a wee bit easier from Haymarket, but Princes Street is generally quiet and easy in the mornings. Shandwick Place often empty! Its much busier 4:30-6:30 in the evenings and a tad frustrating.

I tend to pass waverly about 7:30/7:45 but happy to adjust that for a few runs if you want.

I would generally take the direct route. Either George St to Palmerston Place to Torphichen Place to Haymarket, or Princes St to West Maitland St to Torphichen Place and Haymarket.

Then follow the A8 out of town, left at Saughtonhall Drive, and right just before the railway bridge to get onto the Stenhouse-Broomhouse-EDP bicycle expressway.

The quieter option I might take is Haymarket Yards to Russell Road, then Roseburn and Baird Drive to the Stenhouse path.

Going east, I would probably use either the A8 direct route, or aim to come at Waverley from the south, by taking the Calder Road to Gorgie, Dalry, Telfer Subway (or Morrison Circus) to Fountainbridge, Leamington lift bridge, NMW and MMW and onto Market Street.

I came in yesterday for a reccy, and my journey was like the curate's egg - good in parts.

I followed NCN1 George Street to Melville Street where the signposting let me down. I went left on Manor place, cut along the rough footpath south of St Mary's to Palmerston Place and down to Haymarket that way. I walked it across Haymarket to the station to check out the bike racks. I might be driving a massive dutch bike so I'd pretty much need a sheffield rack as the handbar spread might preclude getting into one of the other racks - we'll see.

From there I went Haymarket Yards, Murrayfield and route 8. It was a signposted well enough but tortuous. Murrayfield/Roseburn Park is a building site as far as I can make out just now but managed on some decent footpaths. Then past that and through some suburban streets until I came up on the lovely tramside path that pretty much takes you right to the front door of Saughton House.

It's good to hear that Princes Street is quiet in the morning, I suspected as much. And in the evening I'd probably take the quieter(?) Melville Street to George Street Route. If I tie up at Waverley. It's still an even bet that I'll just travel through to Haymarket. Haven't decided yet really. But thanks for eveyone's input. I'm not sure about heading out on the A8, I'm pretty confident in traffic but just prefer a quieter life.

I'd say your route is almost as good as it can get. Only change I would make is to turn right at the end of Melville St to avoid that awful footpath and stick on road. You then turn left at Chester St and rejoin Palmerston Place with a bike box and traffic lights. Turn left onto PP and then a right turn onto Landsdowne Crescent. You can follow that along till you hit the station and then join the route at the back of Haymarket Yds. I would hope your commute would be ok - I do it the opposite way a lot and I am generally not too stressed :) Good luck!

I often cycle from the West End to Roseburn at peak time. I'm not a particularly bold cyclist but don't find the A8 that bad. Going through Haymarket Yards is a faff.

I would continue down Palmerston Place and then turn left on to Eglinton Crescent, follow it right to the end and turn left onto Magdala Crescent. If it's too busy to make a right turn on to the A8 you can walk to the pedestrian crossing and stop the traffic. The bit I wouldn't like it going through Roseburn Terrace where you're filtering in the straight-ahead lane, but Roseburn Park is not practicable at present.

I'd turn left at Riversdale Crescent and follow the signs until achieving the bliss of the tramway.

  20. Roseburn Park is perfectly navigable, even on my skinny tyres.

The detour is minimal, but its an obvious route through. A much more pleasant option than the A8, except between half 8 and 9 when the school is going in!

After commuting now since mid-June, I've pretty much abandoned Princes Street, especially after the fatality.

In point of fact I find George Street/Melville Street/Manor Place, Mornington Eglinton Crescent much quicker to get through than Princes Street, Shandwick Place, Haymarket. Getting between George Street and Waverley can be a gigantic faff, though.

Depends on how much of a hurry I am for riding around Murrayfield, but with the imminent opening of the Water Of Leith Path again through Roseburn Park I'll no doubt make that a regular part of the route instead of going on down to Riversdale Crescent.

You can get through Roseburn Park further down Roseburn Crescent. It has a small hillock now which gives you a pleasant view.

@Rosie, yes, I've been over it many times, just depends on how my time is doing. If I'm trying to catch a train I usually get up on the main road at the 1st opportunity.
