    Hi all,

my job has moved to Manchester, so I'm now in Manchester four days a week and in Edinburgh for the other three. The Dutch bike has gone down to Manchester so I'm looking for a replacement here. Since I'm now spending an unreasonable amount of money on rent, I'm really looking for something cheap, but I obviously don't want to end up buying something that's been nicked.

Some people on Gumtree provide a back story, and so I feel relatively confident that they're legit. Are there any other tips?

Alternatively, if there's anyone on here looking to get rid of a basic bike for getting around town, preferably with mudguards and pannier rack, could you drop me a PM?

There was a basic bike for sale this morning (£75) chained to the railings at the MMW / NMW walk junction (Meadows)

    How basic?

    How cheap?

I always start off thinking very basic very cheap, but then see something nice for just a little bit more than I was hoping on paying. And then from there it's not much of a jump to another slightly nicer option...

But there are a number of bikes for sale at the bric-a-brac shop opposite Queens Hall on Nicolson St for 60-70 pounds. I imagine they're bikes that students bought new for 250 quid, kept for three years and then are getting rid of. They're not perfect and don't run especially smoothly, but would get me around.

The only issue is that these tend to be mountain bikes. If they had proper mudguards and pannier racks they'd be perfect.

Thanks edd1e_h. I'll wander by that way this afternoon and take a look.

Don't forget Bike Station while you're in that part of town.

I love the bike station and try to support them, nearly bought a lovely classic racer from them a few years ago but it was just a bit too small. My experience is that they don't have much in the sub hundred pound bracket though (possibly this was just the times that I've been in?). Right now I think I'm looking for a cheaper product than they offer.

The bike that edd1e_h mentioned looks really lovely. Thinking of getting in touch with them.

Arrange to meet the Gumtree seller to test the bike and then steal it from them. It's the only way to be sure ;)

If you're very tall (6'+) then I have a very old Edinburgh Bicycle Continental (probably 25+yo) that's heavy as a tank that I was meaning to pass on to the Bike Station at some point. 2x5speed, hasn't been ridden for a while but I did do some work on it a few years ago to sort out brakes and tyres. I think I had to take the mudguards and rack off but there were mountings for them at least. Free to good home... definitely not stolen :D

Thanks LivD, that's very kind. I fit the tallness criteria! I'm just having a little think about the bike that Edd1e_h recommended on the edge of the meadows, it's very red and shiny and I was quite taken by it, even though it meets few of my original criteria of what I was looking for...

But if I don't go for that then yours sounds perfect and I'll give a donation to the bike station since you're not charging anything for it.

@utrechtcyclist Let me know - drop me a pm. It's not a shiny bike by any means and certainly not offended if you did see it and decide no thanks :)
