Back to work tomorrow after a week's holiday to move house. That means a new commute! Looking forward to it. Bye-bye innocent railway. Commute will be Loanhead through to Gorgie Road.

Any tips on route? Googlemaps is telling me to go up the A701 past Cameron toll to the meadows then along by the canal. Any better way?

I'll also be going to the office at the bottom of Leith walk sometimes - again, Gmaps says the A701 straight through town and down Leith walk is my best route. Any better options?

How about some version of this for LW

I think belting into town on the A701 to the Meadows is probably the most efficient option. Pick up Gilmour Place and drop down to Dundee Street and onwards.

Coming back I'd probably go up Comiston Road as the gradient is more consistent, and head out past Hillend and take the Old Pentland Road.

If you want to avoid the Straiton roundabouts there's the Loanhead-Gilmerton path now, which takes you to Lasswade Road.

I'm generally confident cycling on busy roads and roundabouts, but it's true that I do hate cycling past the westbound exit onto the bypass from the Straiton double roundabout - drivers stuck in that right lane who are about to miss their exit often get pretty reckless in shooting over to the sliproad on the left. That part always leaves my heart racing - I'd imagine it would be even worse during rush hour. Am I right in saying there's a cycle crossing that bypasses the roundabout on the Loanhead side?

The Gilmerton path may be an option. I used to use that path a lot when cycling to Roslyn from Craigmillar.

Coming out on Lasswade road was an option I thought about, but it would feel as if I were going out of my way. I could go through the Loanhead-Gilmerton path and cut through the Straiton nature reserve, bringing me out onto the A701 but avoiding the dreaded double-roundabout...Decisions...

Yes, there's a cycle crossing at the Straiton roundabout. I've only used it once and wasn't a big fan, had to wait very patiently for a gap. But maybe I was just unlucky, and I'd still certainly take it rather than the roundabouts. Not sure where you can cross to the northbound carriageway, but presume that you can...

I can't comment on the Loanhead - Hillend bit. There's a random cut through parallel to the bypass; I'd just go up the hill to the Fairmilehead crossroads instead - though I might explore that cut through now, just for fun. The rest of that would be my usual route in from Fairmilehead; note this is at the weekend, I can't comment on what it is like at commuting times.

Edited to add that Arellcat also suggests the Old Pentland Road/

Uberuce may have more recent experience, but the three-way junction at Damhead (south of The Steading) is generally choked at morning rush hour.

I agree with Arellcat above, in via A701 back via Comiston.

I turn left at the bottom of Liberton Brae to the Kings Buildings and the "Quality Bike Corridor", then turn left at the Meadows (I work near Tollcross).

Coming home I tend to avoid going that way as the junction at the bottom of Liberton Brae is a bit of a nightmare - uphill start then slog up the brae to the lights. I mostly go up through Bruntsfield then Comiston Road, either turning left along Frogston Road then down Burdiehouse, or taking Old Pentland Road back to Loanhead.

I'd avoid Old Pentland Road in the mornings, can't imagine it is fun crossing onto the main road there in rush hour traffic.
