The five-year study of 250,000 UK commuters also showed walking had some benefits over sitting on public transport or taking the car.

The team in Glasgow said cycling took no willpower once it became part of the work routine - unlike going to the gym.

And, yet, here in Scotland our government only spends 1.8% of the travel budget on active travel... while complaining bitterly about not having enough money for the NHS.

@gibbo Sorry, it is now down to just 1.6% !! (thanks mainly to the big rise in trunk road expansion)

See table on page 5 of Spokes 127.

Rather annoying article on this on BBC Breakfast this morning. A wee video with amusing plinking plonky music to show how eccentric cycling is (if you didn't already know) and lots of face pulling from the presenters when insinuating how sweaty and smelly people who cycle to work are.

I should be pleased about positive cycling stuff from the BBC but I just felt a bit irritated!

The most impressive finding of the research for me was that, during the course of the study, regular cycling cut the risk of death from any cause by 41%. That's really amazing.

it was very far from 'a small sample'.

At least there is a small chance SG will pay attention as survey done by Glasgow Uni.

The sheer insanity of this beggars belief.

Everyone complains about the NHS being starved of money, but choke what's probably the #1 way to reduce demand on the NHS. (Active travel.)

If you ran a large business like this, you'd be seen as utterly incompetent.

Reasons to be cheerful? Hopefully a turning point for all of these reasons.

Just seen an article about this on Reporting Scotland. Of course, it had to end with a comedy piece with the presenter donning a helmet and riding off on a Raleigh Chopper, accompanied by comedy bell tinging noise.

I assume the report on the opening of the M8 extension will end with the reporter getting into a clown car, which then falls to pieces.

The news today that cycling to work can cut your risk of premature death by 40 per cent should provide a boost to calls for the Scottish Government to increase investment in new initiatives aimed at pollution-free transport.
