Buying a brake cable shouldn't be this hard

  1. Disclaimer for the lovely Bike Chain people, the nature of what I need, a new brake cable, my current one seeming spongey this morning and investigation showing some serious fraying, meant I couldn't ride down to you.

So it was off to the nearest store by foot, MacDonald Bikes.

"Hi there, I'm just after a brake cable, a barrel-ended one."

Look of uncertainty, after I break up the three-person-staff-chat that had been going on before I walked in, "Right, inner or outer."

    "Inner."

"There are loads of different sizes. Different barrels y'know."

    "Yeah."

"We've got loads of different types."

"Well... Could I maybe have a look, I know what size it is to look at it..."

"But they're all over the place in the workshop. Y'know. They're like gold dust."

"Okay. Well I guess I could go back and get the old cable and bring it to compare?"

    "Yeah."

"Thanks then." And I headed up to BikeTrax, who still had none on display, but fetched me one from the workshop.

Don't know why I ever bother with MacDonald Bikes, they really do never seem interested at all.

Wow - that in comparison to when I was in Freewheelin last week and a guy came in looking for a brake cable to fix his reclining couch, he had stripped one off his bike and tried it, figured out what was needed and after standing in the doorway to the workshop and the shop owner displaying the various types - selecting one, digging through a few trays of different terminators (best word I can think of) customer went away happy (I presume he was going to refit the original brake cable to the bike...)

I've used that shop once and had exactly the same experience. I felt like I was getting in the way of and seriously inconveniencing them slouching around looking all cool and talking about BMXs.

Dissapointed too, as they've Raleigh Bananas in the window and I was well up for a chat about them.
