@RobertWeetman Narrow cyclelane at #PinchPoint is contrary to @scotgov #CyclingByDesign Guidance. Says 2m+ wide or segreg or no lane. Good @ELCouncil example

@SpokesLothian @DFrench88 @fountainbridge @CyclingEdin @SustransScot @RobertWeetman I've had a reply from Active Travel team to say it's being looked into ASAP. I'll post any updates.

I get that the main issue is that the lane is ridiculously narrow.

But is anyone else wondering how a cycle lane bounded by a solid line and a single yellow are compatible? I guess you could legally park to the right the cycle lane, wholly in the main lane?

    @gavincorbett @fountainbridge @SpokesLothian @CyclingEdin @SustransScot Great!
But similar all over Scotland. What would change practice so people don't do this. Guidance fails - minimums EXCLUDING hazards clear:

@StevieCarnie @CyclingEdin @SpokesLothian @DFrench88 @fountainbridge @SustransScot @RobertWeetman Yes, I've asked the team to look at all the issues raised. Width, drains, pinch point. Anything else?

Went along Fountainbridge earlier. Hadn't realised from the photos posted above that the cycle lane going in the opposite direction has all the same problems too.

For some reason the rain brings out all the worst drivers. Three close passes this morning between Polwarth and the King's Theatre junction, one a very deliberate punishment pass by a PHV annoyed at me holding primary after being annoyed by the two previous ones. Made me really think of getting a camera.

Found a link to this on another forum:
Cycle Sheffield meets with the South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership.

"The two main barriers from the police perspective are a lack of resource and ironically health and safety.... The initial risk assessment is that Officers involved would face the possibility of harm. This is clearly ironic as the initiative aims to reduce the risk to cyclist[s]."

So they can't do a project to increase cyclists' safety because it would be too dangerous...

@fimm - that's an interesting article. I suspect lack of resources is the real driver there with health and safety thrown in for good measure.

Funnily enough the health and safety question was raised when I was pitching Op Close Pass to management. We found the most dangerous aspect of the operation was the officer stepping out into traffic and stopping offending cars, followed by the manoeuvres in the stopping by area (the amount of drivers who lose coordination when stopped by the Police!). All the car park needs is an automatic car and a wrong gear selection. It happens.

From a cycling perspective generally I ask our unmarked Police cyclist to sit a bit further towards the kerb than they might normally be (rather than primary/central in the lane). We don't want to make the drivers decisions for them, so I suppose it could be argued that the cyclist is putting themself at a (slightly) higher risk of harm by riding contrary to their training?

Still it's not reason enough not to run and fortunately we're not in South Yorkshire! The fact that several forces UK wide are running the operation and have all conducted risk assessments confirms my belief that it's a money decision.

BBC's Crimewatch Roadshow on BBC1 at 0915hrs on Thursday 29th June 2017 (or iPlayer) is featuring Greater Manchester Police's Op Close Pass work (called Op Considerate). Should be interesting viewing.

@Dom - don't suppose you have any gluttons for punishment who fancy doing the operation on Kirk Brae? Not sure there's anywhere for you to stick the mat, though.

"not yet. We are unfortunately still a long way off a capable IT platform to support that. "

@Dom D - You wouldn't need a capable IT platform, just a browser. It could work like:

    1. Member of public uploads short clip to YouTube, set to private
    2. Fills in form including link to clip
    3. Officer views clip, decides if worth pursuing further

If the officer decides to pursue it further they would then request the full version be burned to a CD and brought to a station.

This would encourage reporting of more incidents of a less severe nature which could be handled through education. Requiring a 101 call and home visit feels like I'm wasting a lot of time for anything less than the worst incidents.

That would be really useful. Northumbria Police are doing something like this, but I have no idea how the process actually works: http://camdencyclists.org.uk/2017/03/northumbria-police-appoint-officer-to-review-cyclists-close-pass-footage/

@Frenchy - plenty of gluttons available! Kirk Brae isn't the best suited location for a Close Pass Op per se. I'm back in work on Tuesday so I'll have another look at it.

@Rob - our IT is genuinely so backwards. It's ongoing at the moment, even just getting good enough hardware to support a browser. I'm not sure if they think we'd watch cat videos all day but we just can't access YouTube yet. I often moan that the people sat in the back of my car have got better technology than us in the front!

@Frenchy - I think Northumbria pulled their scheme after a few weeks?

@Dom - Cheers, Kirk Brae not the best spot, I understand (nowhere obvious to put the mat as the fire station is presumably a no go, and half the traffic goes along Double Hedges Road). If you can make it work though, you're guaranteed "hits".

Hadn't heard Northumbria pulled the scheme - you'll know better than I do - but would be interested in the reasons.

Four fifths of drivers regularly break the speed limit in 20mph zones, with more than one in ten doing more than 30mph.

Government speed compliance statistics for 2016 show that 81 per cent of cars exceeded the speed limit on 20mph roads, with 80 per cent of light commercial vehicles and 71 per cent of HGVs also speeding.

Correction: Four fifths of drivers admit regularly breaking the speed limit in 20mph zones.

Cycling along the Low Road to Duddingston the other day, there was a driver doing 20mph on the dot. The driver following was right up behind them, and the taxi driver behind *them* was right up behind them as well; less than 2s gap between the first and third cars.

I think ~2/3 admit breaking the speed limit. The 4/5 comes from roadside measurement. So some people don't admit to speeding even in anonymous surveys or they don't know what speed they're going compared to the limit.

Perhaps not the right place for this but I struggled to see anywhere better. I have as little time for thieves as the next person, even when they're robbing cars parked in bike lanes :) . However surely this police 'stop' down south was homicidal in the extreme and should be investigated as such?

Aye, struggling to believe there weren't better options there.

The thief made a few key mistakes though, in addition to stealing. A quick getaway on a London Hire Bike is... ambitious. Especially if you plan to "paddle" away on it.

Just a quick update, we've been a bit quiet with physical activity from ourselves the last couple of weeks with Royal week and the stolen motorbike issue dictating resources. Of course there have been the usual public reports coming in and being followed up by division now with support from RP. This is proving more effective in getting to reporters at an agreed time.

There has been a lot of work behind the scenes and I've been meeting bosses from Fife, Central, The Lothians and Borders and West Command. There is a big boss meeting this week so hopefully a formal announcement will follow any decisions.

We're also looking at a variant I've dubbed Operation Horse Pass. You can probably work out what that will be looking at. Although I don't know where they're going to mount the cameras!

I've just had my social media course so once I get my website restrictions lifted I'll be off and hopefully get a lot more out there especially about the reporting aspect.

The educational mat is going to be at the entrance to the Scottish car show this weekend as well. I've got more activity planned for late July and early August and hopefully we'll see it in other areas after that.

I'm out of office until Friday so apologies in advance for any late replies to any comments from this post. Mrs Dom D gets narky if I do work on my days off and she counts this as work!

Finally for the ASL enforcement fans, a driver was issued with a fixed penalty ticket for that offence yesterday. When education fails....
