    Operation Close Pass short video

Worryingly, none of those passes (in the 2nd last video, now on page 20) are ones I'd consider reporting, since I've had far worse for which I've been told there's nothing they can do.

Maybe I should start reporting close passes again.

I hope I don't meet the majority of drivers who have commented on the BBC article.

I see John Beattie has been self hating on twitter and Radio Scotland again. Couldn't even get the close pass distance correct (his tweet said 0.75m). Sample below - pass the sick bucket. Radio Scotland really is a pathetic snivelling little station.

"Here's what I think about cyclists. And I ride my bike every day. We are at times arrogant and provocative in how and where we cycle. I see it. We share the roads with vehicle drivers. Cyclists cannot indulge in whataboutery and we need to call out our own behaviour first."

Er, that is whataboutery, isn't it? To paraphrase: never mind that motorists might not give cyclists enough room from time to time but WHATABOUT the bad things that some cyclists do?

(Why am I suddenly reminded of General Melchett and his warning never to pooh-pooh a pooh-pooh?)

Here's what I think of motorists despite being one myself. They are ignorant and think the road belongs solely to them. They are unable to look properly so don't give way and overtake when it is unsafe to do so.
They park on pavements so it is more convenient for them in the pretence it is somehow in everyone's best interests to do so.

John Beattie - Pete Gregson overlap on Venn diagram, self hating cyclists?

The UK's feral roads deter cycling – we need enforcement, not calls for respect

"British Cycling is calling for what survey respondents think might work: a mutual respect campaign for all road users, ring-fenced funding for cycling and walking, and a national network of employers to help the government understand how to get more people cycling to work.

"...Campaigns calling for mutual respect risk creating a false equivalence between drivers and cyclists when none exists. People on bikes may behave badly sometimes, as all road users do, but the greatest potential for harm on the roads comes when we drive.

"West Midlands police’s exemplary evidence-based operation targets drivers who close pass with education and, in the worst cases, enforcement. In a year, reports from people cycling of close passes halved, and cycling collisions dropped by 20%."

  9. Re John Beattie.

Do you think the program editors wrote that for him? I struggle to see how a serious cyclist could possibly think the problem lies with them.

Agree fully about RS, it's plumbing new depths every month.

could have done with this along Seafield Rd this morning - almost wiped out by a van pulling a trailer which was significantly wider.

The van was too close and would normally have warranted words had I caught him at the light. I am not sure how the trailer missed me.

    All good up to

"But two cyclists were also warned for other offences, which could range from dangerous cycling to not wearing a helmet." (my emphasis)

    EEN churnalism at its worst

They were doing this in Holyrood Park this morning. Red Audi passed me and a suspiciously hi-vis rider a bit too close and was stopped by police motorcycle at the roundabout.

18 stopped for close passes. Would be interesting to how many are reported compared to being ‘educated’

I'd say "None" is the likely answer.

Urgh. I should have known better than to engage with the idiots replying to that tweet...

Summary: "Close passing a cyclist is completely safe and the police are wasting their time here. The police should instead be targeting cyclists who all go through red lights, which is far more dangerous."

Driver attitudes these days are a disgrace. I blame the police for years of inaction that has allowed such behaviour to go unchallenged for years.

I passed my driving test in 1987 and I was always taught to take extra care when driving near cyclists. Sadly nowadays too many drivers won't give you an inch as they saw a cyclist ride on a pavement once in their sad and bitter lives!

There is a story on here of polis saying they are going to do a driver from video evidence.

The police will act when they can get a conviction. Or we can make the police act when they can get a conviction.

We all need to create a society where poor behaviour such as bad driving is named calmly and consistently amongst our friends, family, work colleagues etc.

We need to work to change legislation.

We need to work on pollution, congestion, global warming.

    Much work to be done

Some new statistics on cycling and road safety, available here:

    https://www.gcph.co.uk/publications/924_cycling_in_scotland_review_of_cycling_casualties

The authors raise a good point about close passes and near misses not being reported to the police. Even if not directly acted upon, reporting these events could still be worthwhile to help paint an accurate picture of what its like to cycle on Scotland's roads, in cold hard stats.

Double post sorry - this is probably the more relevant thread:

This is an open admission the police believe the roads to be unsafe to cycle on, but won't do anything about it.

    Holy smokes!

I would rather explain in person as the H & S rationale is too lengthy for Social Media

I suspect she'll be back on the how to manage social media course before the end of the week!

One thing to admit something so outrageous quite another to not be able to share the rationale behind it, it's just asking for a twitter pile on.

...911's a joke in yo' town...

    (Worcester anyway)

I look forward to hearing what the "rationale" is when it finally does emerge. Personally I think "I don't wanna" is all the rationale they really have and that's quite short enough for the twitters.

3 days left to respond to Highway code consultation, closes at 11:59pm on 27 October 2020. Proposals include: "give motorcyclists, cyclists, horse riders and horse drawn vehicles at least as much room as you would when overtaking a car (see Rules 211 to 215). As a guide:
─ leave a minimum distance of 1.5 metres at speeds under 30 mph
─ leave a minimum distance of 2.0 metres at speeds over 30 mph
─ for a large vehicle, leave a minimum distance of 2.0 metres in all conditions

@slowcoach: There's a lot of wordage in there; not easy to concentrate all the way through. I'm having to take it in chunks.

I think H3 is worded particularly confusingly, and will tell them so. This is linked to a lack of consistency in terms used which I will highlight.

I believe I have been allowed to fill this in twice? Once at start and again at end or maybe I lost the will to go on. The first time.

In a two ronnies sketch I objected to various things being missing that then came up.

M6 ma8n quibble is the 0.5m from kerb leaves you in gutter And that they should link the safe pass 1.5 m to the 0.5m from the kerb and then0.5m from car doors.

Also the riding two abreast stuff is unclear.

However the last time the subspecies read the HC was just before their test, if they sat a test
