ruggtomcat, yes, required reading. These New Zealand cyclists are putting up with some truly awful driver beahaviour. To see it recorded and measured confirms what a lot of people round here must already know. That cyclists are FAR more sinned against than sinning. I think I make about one error of judgement every six months or so on the roads. I'm not being big headed, I've driven with a clean license since 1985 and cycled to work since 1995 so I think I know what I'm doing. Yet when I cycle on the roads I experience at least a couple of careless mistakes by drivers per journey. I gave up cycling on the roads to work a couple of years ago and now use the cycle path through Brunstane and the Innocent Railway. That will soon be too icy (for me) to use. So I'll take the train. By any measure that's just rubbish and goes to the heart of what's wrong, in my opinion, with transport policy and driver attitudes.

Well yes but nothing we don't already know!
When I watch people cycling badly I sometimes think they have it right since when they swerve in front of cars the motorist always puts the brakes on.
Whereas with me, who looks round for gaps or signals if I actually need to turn right, too many drivers slam their foot on the accelerator like the HGV driver this morning. I don't know what he was playing at since there was no room to overtake at all, not even if I was in the gutter which I wasn't. Plus it only slowed him down since if he had just NOT accelerated I would have been able to turn off immediately instead of having to swerve about looking over my shoulder to make sure he actually slowed down.
