Hi, I'm exploring a new route for the coming weekend - the one I think most folks here have done many times...

One part involves going down the Cramond (Silverknowes) esplanade westbound, aiming to continue on Route 76 along the shore.

What would be the best way of crossing the Almond River then?

The shortest option seems to be going back (along the river) toward Cramond Brig to connect with Route 1. I'm not sure however of the quality of this part of the route, which seems to be 1-1.5 miles long on the map. The Sustrans map points to the rough surface and some steps. Is this something I can negotiate on my road bike with Conti tires? I also have my son riding with me. Obviously, I'd rather cycle an extra mile to avoid punctures...

Hence I'm thinking if I should contemplate the other options - like turning on Blackhall Path (Route 1) earlier on... That said, I really love Cramond so would like to be able to cycle the full length of the esplanade

Your advise would be much appreciated

You can carry or push your road bike up the almond art crammond but alternate route advisable

Up to Royal high route 76 quite well sign posted?

The Salvesen Steps (half way between the mouth of the Almond and Cramond Brig) are currently closed.

I would come off the River Almond path just after the Cramond Falls cafe - turn sharp left up a short steep hill. Turn right at the top of the hill then follow the road until you see the ped crossing where you would usually cross from Blackhall to go down to Cramond Brig. Turn right, go over Cramond Brig and rejoin NCN1/76 at top of hill.
Road section is OK, not scary - depending on age and confidence of your son I guess.

Thanks everyone - this is extremely helpful

Didn't realise the path along the river (steps) was closed - time for Sustrans to update their map perhaps?

I like the idea from Vez - this is something I might try this weekend. Take it that's Whitehouse Road I need to follow till Barnton Ave, where I can basically get on Route 1?..

    Thanks again!

Yes, Whitehouse Road and sorry I meant Barnton not Blackhall I think! But you obviously worked it out... And the short steep road up from Cramond Falls cafe would seem to be called School Brae.

From Cramond Association FB - 20th April

"Salveson Steps - An update from our friends FRAW!

Following the closure of the Salvesen Steps on 20th January, we have all been forced to use the lengthy diversion. We are pleased to report that work has now started to demolish the condemned wooden structure and replace it with temporary scaffolding steps.

The route should be available again within two weeks, but we will issue an update when the actual date is known.

In the meantime, while work is in progress, the Steps are very dangerous and no-one should be tempted to use them.

So **could** be open this week...

Although, I still wouldn't recommend them even if they are open unless you wanted a good work out for your upper body, but everyone's different.
