Not sure if this has been posted already.

    "
Everyone should walk on Wednesdays for short journeys, transport minister Humza Yousaf urged today.

    "
Ministers have already said they want walking to be the norm for journeys up to two miles by 2030, and cycling up to five miles.

2030? Kicked well into the long grass.

My questions to Mr Yousaf would be,

    (A) what % of the transport budget will be assigned to active travel in order to encourage this?

    (B) In what year will he hit that %?

If cycling is the "norm" for most city journeys

    (A) What % of parking spaces will be for bikes?

    (B) What other obstacles have to be overcome to encourage such high use of cycling?

    (C) How and when will he overcome these?

    (D) What disincentives will he use to discourage people from driving those distances?

I suspect his answers to these questions will be nothing other than fluff.

As I said, 2030 as a goal is kicking the ball so far into the long grass that he can continue to do nothing to encourage cycling/walking... or discourage driving.

Yeah sure, also eat your Five A Day, quit smoking, drink sensibly, go to bed early, etc.

How about something radical like banning private motor vehicles from city centres on Wednesdays? A bit like the old half day closing (for shops) but more of a full day closing (for motor vehicles)?

Ah, but then that would mean doing something instead of just asking folk nicely.

If you want to see what's possible - and in what time frames - it's worth reading about Mayor Hidalgo's plans for Paris.

For example, her target to ban diesel cars from Paris by 2020.

    Now there's a proper suggestion.

Or, if that's too extreme (not IMO!), ban them from many central streets. Like Paris will close the Champs some Sundays.

So is this a target, a shared vision or just a suggestion?
