Deliveroo petition for proper employee rights:-

Deliveroo claims people who work for them are “self-employed”, meaning they don’t get key rights. But, here in Edinburgh, a group of Deliveroo riders have got together to complain about their contracts. The Deliveroo riders are asking for the same rights as everyone else. And they’re asking people in Edinburgh to sign a petition in support.

Letter stating grievances here. When I see Deliveroo riders with those boxes on their back I'm struck by their top-heaviness and how risky it looks, but they don't mention that.

"As a self-employed "business," the time spent delivering for Deliveroo is not representative of our actual hours worked, nor are fees representative of our actual income:

    > Cyclists have to spend an enormous number of hours repairing their bikes, often under time pressure because it needs to be fixed in time for the next shift. We also have to spend time trying to understand the tax system for being self-employed, do our accounting, and file our taxes.

    > Expenses are incurred from providing a bike and smartphone, repairs, phone plan, and other equipment.

We have to pay a £150 deposit for our uniform, safety gear, and the equipment necessary for carrying out the job. This is deducted from our pay with no agreed upon or predictable pattern. No inventory is taken of which equipment new riders are given, to compare with when returning the gear.

Section 9 of the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 states: "No employer shall levy or permit to be levied on any employee of his any charge in respect of anything done or provided in pursuance of any specific requirement of the relevant statutory provisions"

We are not covered by company insurance, despite it being a very dangerous job"
