    This is dreadful. Really awful.

And what is worse, I quite literally described this section as a "crazy death trap" in the Evening News 5 years ago. That was meant to be a warning not a prophecy. Kim Harding, Tracey Griffen and her husband Andy, Uberuce, Dave McCraw also joined for that photoshoot.

Being able to say "I told you so" in circumstances like this just makes you feel sick inside.

I saw someone who did not appear to be a policeman remove the bike from under the bus. I thought it was odd as I imagined it would need to be recorded as the scene of an accident - is this relevant do you think? Debating whether I should report it?

Awful news. RIP to the lady involved. I have my own thoughts on the trams, and commute there daily, but will save those for another day...

This wasn't an accident. Accidents you can't forsee. This was a business decision.

    +1

it was only a matter of time.

a tragedy that has claimed the life of a young lady.

    i'm gutted, and bitter.

    Very sad to hear.

I ride through that junction every time I work in my Edinburgh office - really brings it close to home.

Thanks @murun-buchstansangur for the affirmation, left a message on the non-emergency number, which it all it would allow me to do.

Have a man-hug. You did what you could, but that must feel awful.

So sad to hear. Having previously been tipped by the tram tracks into the next lane I have now changed my route to avoid Princes St.

Thankfully, the cars behind had left enough space for me to get up and out the way, but scary to think that the exact same thing has resulted in a death...

I've stopped going that way because I feel so vulnerable.

I go by canning street if going that way, safer going up one way street the wrong way for a very small time

So so sad. Condolences to the poor girl's family. I had a similar fall at that point before the line was completed luckily no vehicle behind me then! The section where the lines bend up to North St Andrew St is equally bad.

PoP Facebook page has a May 14th post from a woman who crashed on the tramlines; she has now added a comment to the thread saying it was pretty much exactly where this morning's death happened.

You can bet your last quid that those phycos at rabbies tours are as culpable as the council.

Tram lawyers: ‘We warned you 2 years ago a cyclist would die’

    Well said

Meanwhile the council urinates about with comparative non-issues like Cramond Brig

Is there a law like corporate manslaughter that could apply here?

I'm guessing politicians are exempt from such laws. So, as usual, they'll get away with it.

Has Edinburgh ever done a die-in before? London does them: https://stopthekilling.org.uk

    bbc, helpful as ever:

It is understood the woman's bike tyre got caught in tram tracks, which caused her to topple over into the path of traffic.

cos people commuting on bikes ain't part of "traffic"?

    shame on you

I can be a bit prickly over language, but I don't think the BBC would ever say that a man's car had 'toppled over into traffic' if it hit a road defect and overturned.

No. The language implies instability and perhaps incompetence on the part of the rider.

Radio at lunchtime brought up insurance for cyclists in its usual motor centric manner. (Not in relation to this incident though).
What we need is Presumed Liability.

Like the mythical road tax all discussions about cycling are always set in 1974.

My wife is till shocked by this incident as am I. She sees quite a lot of close misses every day.

@emuir - I was wondering the same, but I am concerned that whatever is organised should first consider the victim's family and if anything is done by way of protest (I'm sure a lot of us are feeling this way) it shouldn't be done without first their full blessing and involvement. I know all the PoP folk are already very good at this.

@algo I think your thoughts on this tragedy are very appropriate. Nothing should be done without allowing the family of the young woman to grieve and then only with their agreement. At the right time, I would suggest a white bike in the vicinity, if the family agrees.
