On a related note, comments on 'Next Door' forum say that thieves are targeting communal garages in Orchard Brae. Whatever they are using gets through thick chain locks and Krypton locks.

The original poster blamed 'teenagers' but this seems a bit advanced for opportunistic amusement.

    More annoying updates.
one of the residents called the police to say the thieves had abandoned two reasonably good quality bikes, and could they be collected to check if they are stolen.

    24 hrs later, nothing.

    is this normal?

I carry a Leatherman for Work sometimes. Following a Discussion about Cable locks with a friend, I bet him the price of his lock I could cut it in less that 30 Seconds with my Leatherman. Like snipping a slightly tough Cable tie! I told him to put my winnings towards a Good Quality lock!

Back to Advice on a previous thread when I asked about insurance, Don't be the easiest & highest value target in the bike rack!

Hey... just for the fun of it... can anyone else remember the original 'New Cyclist' article that revealed to everyone that the unbreakable D locks weren't any such thing?

Battery-powered angle grinder looks good for removing, er, "other things" as well.

You can borrow my fluorescent workies' jacket if you like. You can do pretty much anything in plain sight without an eyelid being batted if you're wearing one of them.

    Too true.

I've deDlocked a few times using a portable grinder, without 'workie' disguise.

    Only challenged once.

    "Is that your bike"

    "No"

"Well I'll just take your photo"

Obviously I didn't run, but doubt person did anything with photo!

I have challenged folk cutting locks (or indeed removing a car stereo!), and have been convinced of their innocent intentions.

On the other hand, a simple "Can I help you?" to an intruder on Uni premises resulted in them fleeing.

I'm guessing that few thieves consider it worthwhile to waste a valuable head start in return for attempting to brazen it out, but I've got a very small sample size.

On the other end of the cutting tool, I've not been challenged on the one and only time I've needed to recover a bike from a public place - but there I had already informed the local security in case I was "caught".

I cut @magnatom's lock in a shower of sparks in front of Hemma Bar and no one said anything, but then him and his kids were doing a classic Madness line-up behind me...

@nedd1e I don't hope you're not suggesting some vigilante chicane removal?
