The transport department has responded to criticism by pointing to accident data showing new lanes increase pedestrian safety. Transport commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan said: "The record speaks for itself. Injuries have dropped dramatically on streets where bike lanes have been installed."

  2. Richard Lionheart has a wonderfully ill-informed ranty wantdering comment!

"Just for the record could we note that motorists pay for all of the road space and most of the education and health service budgets through taxation: Road tax, Fuel levy and VAT on the Fuel Levy. In addition they pay Car Purchase TAX and additional massive amounts of VAT. They are the only road users and indeed section of society required to pay tax on a tax!

Then after paying for Training to use the roads and paying for statutary tests, they are the only one's subjected to an oppressive road use regime!

In addition they are subjected to Traffic "calming" which in Edinburgh is no more than a Permanent Means of Penalty, indeed "torture", applied to one group in society!

They are the ONLY ones' to whom blame is applied by "road safety groups" in case of a road use accident, even when they were not and could not have been too blame!

Bus lanes and cycle lanes break the common laws of road use and as such pose an increased accident risk to all road users.

All road users have a duty of care not just the motorists. the present "Driver Hate" campaign has gone too far. It is time for other road users to be taught how to use the roads safely and to take their share of blame when accidents do occur."
