I think that they have said that they will be making some kind of journey information data available, so we should be able to do something interesting with it.

"Those bikes don't work, and that phone number sucks" according to a man in a kilt speaking in a north American accent on the West Port at lunchtime.

Re-reading the Open Data page on the website, it says anonymised "trip data" will be available later on - not necessarily route data, but presumably at least the start/end stations/times.

Took out #EarlyBird subscription and was planning several city centre journeys today... but

Not early enough to get the only one available at local rack overnight, but then again didn't want to reach first point of call 75 mins early.

Spotted my first Takeaway Bike being ridden up past the Festival Theatre. Dude was waggling it side to side in a non-cyclist way which is great.

The dock at Bristo Square now has some instructions at either end. I spotted two high-vis wearing people inspecting the ends of the dock the other evening so I suspect that they were applying the decals. They left in a car, which had been left in the bus pull-in lane with its hazard lights flashing. Pity they didn't use their own transport...

Had my first use of one today - took a bike up to EBC for a (hopefully) warranty issue and took a bike from George Square back to Porty.

The uncertainty of a dock at your destination is certainly a big issue for me. As I was leaving George Square there were no spaces in Porty but thankfully two had appeared by the time I got there.

Well especially if your destination is at Porty, which is an extremely isolated dock. I guess I'd just take the bike home and refresh dock status every 2 minutes if I got caught out there. Could still get very expensive very quickly though..

Hopefully they add dockless docking soon

Has anyone heard a reliable date on when the next docks are going in?

I hope it's not going to be a "big bang" to hit the Christmas target - I imagine signups to the scheme have already plateaued due to limited geographical reach. The Cllr's remarks in the EEN last week suggested she had seen plans for 80 which is about half to two thirds* of what will be needed to hit the target, unless they're going for very big docks.

    * The golden ratio seems to be about 40-50% bikes to parking spaces, so 1000 bikes means hitting 2100 spaces or thereabouts. Assuming every future dock takes 10 bikes, that means providing 180 more but once you factor in some large ones to cope with central area peak demand we're maybe talking 110-120

There have been no more planning applications for docks on private land, there was a handful required for phase 1, so I'd expect to see more. Just search for "docking" on the planning portal.

“Just search for "docking" on the planning portal.”

    Must be easier ways!

Three ECH people signed up here, but they seem to have stopped answering questions.

A Just Eat cycle passed me on NMW in the dark yesterday evening. Its rear light was not functioning. Not ideal.

Is there a means on the app to report faulty bikes?

    If not, there should be.

It only needs to be a drop-down menu of multiple choices & a means to identify the bike.

There is. I think it appears on the "You've returned your bike" notification you get on the app when you dock the bike.

@neddie not sure the user would have necessarily noticed, espeically if it had been working when they started their journey. I briefly considered shouting after them, but I decided not to. Hopefully somebody will pick up on it...

I was in Madrid over the weekend.

Many hire bikes and scooters to be seen all over the central / tourist areas.

However, most of the hire bikes and scooters were electric variants, recharging on the docking stations before being picked up by the next punter.

Bike use looked to be mostly locals rather than tourists, perhaps due to the very fast roads in central Madrid, or the very good Metro system.

Scooters appeared to me to be a touch on the fast side and more of a gimmick.

In Oslo airport a month or so back, staff used (non electric) scooters to get around everywhere - v efficient in a large airport.

After last night's hire I can confirm that this is correct.

I spotted somebody seemingly commuting into town from the west (presumably from the Fountainbridge dock) on a Just Eat bicycle this morning on the far side of the Melville Drive crossing.

@PS spotted two being loaded up and driven away in a big van at the Hamilton place dock on Sunday night - presumably reported faulty.

@unhurt Could be. Or maybe they've started moving bikes from over-stocked docks to understocked ones?

Wondered about that but the rack was only 2/3 full (and it only holds I think 7) - but maybe there's an optimum Monday morning stocking arrangement across locations...

eagle eyed colleague suggesting each of the four bikes outside the office have their own individual names.

Yes - all the bikes seem to have their own names (some Gaelic) and numbers.

If their tech is reasonable they'll have a good idea of "unfulfilled trips" at each docking station and will be using it to start to plan the operation of moving bikes back and forth. It's something that they still haven't figured out in London, although they have a reasonable flow od bikes from stations -> the city in the morning and then back again in the evening. Although woe betide you if you want to get a boris bike in Farringdon or similar in the evening - no chance.

Hopefully the geographical nature of Edinburgh isn't resulting in everything sliding to the north.

The nature of the beast will lead to asymmetrical flows appearing and I am a big fan of providing ride-credits to those who re-balance in order to reduce the amount of vanning

    It's a geo-dock!

Bikes appear to take a little longer to hire from these, but maybe I just got unlucky. Both me and someone next to me had to press the button and wait 30s for the bike to talk to the central server before the wheel released.

I've had this first thing in the morning from actual docks too.

Returning involves a similar wait for the server to release the lock. Unlike the racks where the bikes instantly lock, you need to use your phone to return a bike to a geo-dock. Just be aware of this if you're on 10%

@Klaxon So, do you just park it on the carpet? Seems neat.

Had my first full dock issue this morning at Canonmills. Meant I had to take my bike home (into the stairwell while I collected my bag) and then cycle to a dock halfway to the office instead of my planned stroll into work. Found that I was quite warm as a result - uphill, carrying a laptop, on a fairly muggy day, so hopefully that's the worst I'll get on that.

On or close adjacent to, yea. It remains to be seen how strict the geofences are set up given allowance for GPS margin of error.

I'd say they are pretty tight as to begin with I couldn't unlock a bike as my phone showed me on the other side of the street

Wonder if you can spoof your location to a mat enough that it'll just let you keep the bike at home and unlock it when you wish. Won't work if it actually knows where the bike is.
