PMs sent to those who've requested so far. Don't be shy, give it a try; I still have loads!

@IWRATS we could arrange to meet so you can borrow a bike hired via my app, even though that's probably against their T&Cs?

@Iwrats perhaps you could borrow Madame Iwrats's handheld technological device? Footage of use to be uploaded to Facebook as an educational video after.

Thanks for the code jdanielp. The app has confirmed it as a valid daily subscription code and tells me that it will be valid for 1 days(sic) from when I take out a bike.

Unfortunately it also reminds me that I am more than 10Km from the nearest station so I wont be renting a bike today.

@acsimpson great, thanks for confirming the level of access!

I still have loads of codes for one day of free Just Eat Cycle usage before the end of December. PM if interested!

Is there a cooling off period between hires? I.e., if I return a bike to a station, how long do I need to wait before taking another one out?

Thanks, @jdanielp, app has accepted the code :)

@Frenchy You can re-apply immediately, as you will find out if you ever experience the issue I have when the app doesn't tell me which bike it's giving me until after it's already decided that I didn't want it, or when you find the offered bike at a geo-dock and press the button in plenty of time but when it still says "TOO SLOW" and rescinds the hire.
Unfortunately, this can mean that if you return a bike immediately because it's duff but the app doesn't recognise the return and so doesn't offer you the "report" option, it may offer you the duff bike a second time.

Ta. I have indeed had that issue, I just wondered if the system was "clever" enough to only let you immediately rehire if you were still in the same place.

Spotted from the bus this morning: a small collection of hire bikes parked at the corner of the south end of Marchmont Crescent and Marchmont Road.

A number of other sites have also appeared in the western part of Marchmont on the map today, including close to Warrender Pool.

Sounds good. I still have at least 10 free Just Eat Cycles one day codes, even if I use a few myself, so feel free to ask for another code even if you have used one already...

The number of bikes listed in a dock often seems to be fewer than the number that are actually there. Presumably some bikes get marked for maintenance and withdrawn from service, or similar?

I've also noticed this happen if I'm not quick enough at taking a bike out, and have to try again. It seems to think both bikes have been taken out (presumably temporarily).

Also a good point. But I meant just when I'm passing by. E.g. just now, 3 bikes there, but app says only 1 available. Similar story at all four docks I've passed today.

Had myself a go on these bikes last week, to go KB->Commie pool->Grove Street.

The hire process was nice and smooth, once I'd danced around the rack a few times to ensure the app recognised I was in the correct location.

Seat clamp wasn't too hard to operate though the alarming bend the lever developed made me fear I'd snap the lever off before it locked shut! For people with cold hands or less grip strength it would be a struggle to use so I'm glad they are being replaced.

The lights were useless for a wet winter evening. Quite a lot of drivers were already moving into my space before they noticed me. Yelling at them helped them with the noticing I think. Not something I experience on my B&M equipped other bikes. By the end I was wishing I had a hiviz vest (which I don't normally wear).

Brakes nice and progressive with plenty of stopping power if you need it. I thought the headset was loose at first as there's a bit of slop in the roller-brake mechanism.

Gearing was a bit low for my taste as I could spin out in 3rd going uphill, but ideal for casual pootling. I missed the acceleration of a bigger gear when mixing it with traffic but that's all.

The pedals were a bit slippy in the wet but this may be because old combat boots are hardly ideal cycling footwear!

Despite these minor niggles I enjoyed gliding around bolt upright. Those big wide tyres are like riding around on a couch compared to 28mm Gatorskins.

All in all, I'm impressed and would use the bikes again if the opportunity presents.

Message received on the app today:

New Cycle Hire Points: This week we will be rolling out new virtual stations at: Dalry Road, Gibson Terrace, Banfield Drive, Dundee Terrace, M&S Morningside, Starbucks Colinton Road, Marchmont Cresent, Meadow Place, Warrendar Park Road/ Spottiswoode Street, Whitehouse Loan (Bruntsfield Crescent), Thirlestane Road/ St. Margarets Place, Simon Square, Lutton Place, South Trinity Road/ Ferry Road, Summerplace/ Inverleith Terrace, East London Street (St. Mary's Primary), Macdonald Road, Leith Walk (Dalmeny Street). Due to the weather we are unable to lay the mats, so the hire points will be marked in the app and visually by a bike at each end of the hire point. Please drop bikes off between the two marker bikes in an orderly line. Happy Cycling :)

"Marker bikes" probably explains my earlier query about the extra bikes in each location....

@jdanielp No, I am happy to pay as and when. Thanks for the offer though.

"Due to the weather we are unable to lay the mats" - who would have guessed it would be cold and wet in December?

Evidently the folk in charge guessed, otherwise they'd have just delayed everything rather than coming up with a fairly ingenious early solution.

Noticed the ones (or perhaps, given marker bikes, just one for now) at the top of Marchmont Crescent with much excitement this morning.

Is it just a coincidence or do these new virtual docks correspond to City Car Club locations?

Also, more virtual stations unveiled today: Dundee Terrace and two on Dalry Road.

Spotted the Dundee Terrace one this morning. Given that there is a dock by the student housing behind Sainsbury’s this is starting to look like good density.

Excellent. The app now shows Free Bikes, Parking Spaces and Duff Bikes separately.

The seat clamp was, I gather, a different spec to that used on London bikes, and the refit is straightforward.

A picture of the new type might be helpful on website? Encourage users to leave old clamps for quicker completion of the upgrade, and to be aware of making extra sure the old clamps are properly adjusted when using one

Wouldn't surprise me if there is no coincidence at all.

If I was looking for populations who are used to using "shared assets" and have the money to spend on a membership to something then I'd start off with those locations for sure!

  29. The one place that probably doesn't need more docks is leith.

    I'll get me coat...

They still all seem to be clustered around destinations. Very few in predominately residential districts.
