I hope they have provided law enforcement with a web page which shows the location of the stolen bikes in real-time - would be easy to do.

Over the last week, the most bikes at the Infirmary has been 2. They weren't there long. Most of the time there's 0 with one out of order. I don't know if it's the same out of order one each time but I definitely feel like they are not feeding that dock for whatever reason.

I won't be shocked if it's getting rifled regularly by the yoof. It's a stupid place to put a dock. Literally no passing footfall to discourage and a handy thick treeline to boot.

There must be a well overlooked common area within the hospital grounds. That dock could be game changing for shift work commuters if it were virtual (with very large capacity) and kept well stocked at all times to make sure if someone arrives by bike there’s one there for them going home

I'm hoping (but probably shouldn't expect too much) that when the building work at the front of the site (Old Dalkeith Road side) is finished, they'll move the dock there.

They could even have the two docks, to see which one people prefer using...

It'll be to do with liability and public land and such but that would be a MUCH better place for it. Currently the majority of car parking and the bus stops are closer to the hospital doors than the bikes. And they're up a hill. Even over on the other other side next to the Bioquarter buildings would make more sense.

Down to only 125 bikes in the entire system according to the open data (via oobrien) this morning

I wonder if the bikes are marking themselves as unavailable when they're blown over. There were certainly more bikes at Dundee Terrace yesterday than appeared on the system.

Incidentally, has anyone had trouble with the locks at virtual docking stations? The bike I had was very reluctant to lock even though the lever seemed to be all the way down. It didn't help that the plastic tab over the lever was missing.

An awful lot of stations with zero or only 1 bike showing elsewhere in the city centre too...

    Southside still (almost) cycle-less…

According to the map, there are absolutely no bikes in Bruntsfield, Marchmont and Newington just now (Does the not particularly obvious docking point hiding behind Nicolson Street Tesco count as Newington? Well, apart from there).

Apparently only 6 people cycling just now (so it's not as though a lot of bikes are in use at this exact moment), and my feeling from the map is that there are substantially fewer bikes in service just now than normal.

I know that the Leith Links dock has been terribly vandalised, and bikes stolen, but I really hope that it is not the case that n-n-n-n-ne'er-do-wells (trying to avoid the other n-word) have found the bike locks to be particularly vulnerable to breaking open, and that word (and vandalism/theft) is spreading widely across the city? :-(

  14. There seems to have been a significant upswing in the reporting / mentioning of vandalised/abandoned/obviously stolen Just Eat Bikes on social media in the last week or two.

I think the local youths-of-shady-character have recently figured out how to make the bikes rideable without paying, and news of how to do it seems to have spread.

I make it just 93 bikes now in the wild, according to the live data feed, which is less than when the scheme was introduced. In the last week I've seen a bike abandoned in Oxgangs and 2 being pushed around Dumbiedykes by some shady types (1).

I agree that there must be some security flaw that is now being exploited. Does not bode well for the future of the scheme.

    (1) Hoodies up, shouting, swearing and pushing stolen bikes around - qualifies as shady, in my opinion.

    “pushing stolen bikes around”

    Not even rideable?

chdot - it was up the steep slope towards the Skelf. I grind up it in a low gear, but quite a few folk push up it. Would be tough going on a takeaway bike.

“Hi Chris, were upgrading the seat clamps across our fleet and to do this as quickly as possible we are removing the bikes in large batches during the winter period. We will be back to our full complement once the upgrades have been completed. It won't be for long. :-)”

    Down to 78 in circulation

Hope this is an emergency rollout of anti-theft measures as it’s a useless service right now

I spotted a Just Eat Cycles employee unloading bikes with new seat clamps from a very full anonymous white van in Bruntsfield a little earlier... I think that they were destined for the docking station behind the toilet block on the corner of Bruntsfield Links.

The Royal Infirmary station has disappeared from the map on the website now.

Local concerned citizens reporting a number of yoofs in Colinton, one of whom was on a Just eat bike, this seems like it might be far from it's natural home seen as the nearest dock is the end of the canal.

Someone mentioned something about a different light flash if they're stolen?

It's rather disconcerting that the RIE dock disappears, the number of bikes available across the city drops like a stone and the company say hee-haw about it except "Erm, seat clamps!" in direct replies to questions on Twitter. What's to be lost by telling the truth and saying wee dafties are chorin' them and they're going to spoil it for us all.

Put it this way, I'd not be shelling out for a season pass right now.

Sounds like there's plenty in Muirhoose, mind: https://twitter.com/TRIMandFOWP/status/1091010497703485445

Pretty much no bikes visible for hire on the south side over the last few days unfortunately.

Seems to be a total failure of preventive, detective and corrective controls.

Speaking to a local 11 yo, he said the easy method of removal was a topic of excited discussion in the playground...

Well that's one way of getting people excited about cycling.

Bike Hire map, shows only 91 bikes available today and 14 stations are empty.

They must be changing/sorting out the locks somehow.

My money is on a biro in the locking mechanism, a la that old kryptonite lock.

This sort of thing was inevitable. Seem to recall London had similar problems at first. They'll probably sort it out soon. In the meantime, just as well our council tax is not paying for the scheme...

    Mind you, could be worse:
