Edinburgh Cycle Hire Scheme

Just watched someone blatantly ride off on a stolen hire bike. So sad.

Presumably the nefarious use thing is built into the costs of the bike hire model and until we cure the ills of society it's just something that is going to happen...
As long as the bikes are retrievable it should be manageable. It can be treated like fare dodging on public transport - a few reprobates do it, but the vast majority of people pay their way.

Yeah but unhurt should know better! :D

Oh. :-)

At the time of writing (7.20pm) the scheme has had 346 hires today. I think that's the closest they have ever been to beating day 1 last year when it was free, with 403.
The median trip duration is up to 24 minutes suggesting a large volume of long leisure hires

I saw three groups of three people on hired bikes going anticlockwise on the NEPN alone on the way home. Unfortunately, all seemed unaware that it's a two-way thing.

It definitely feels like usage is up. I arrived at Canonmills to an empty dock, went into Tesco, and by the time I came out five minutes later there were another six bikes there.

Currently at 472 trips with 40 people cycling right now. A new record!
Posted 5 years ago # -
Past 500 now.
Posted 5 years ago # -
Yesterday’s total ended up at 594 rides from 378 riders, beating the previous records by about 30%
It took 6 months to beat launch day, I wonder how long this one will stand
I read that Velib (Paris) at it’s peak before the disastrous overhaul had 1 bike for every 100 citizens. That’d be 5000 bikes in Edinburgh.
One can dream

It may even be beaten today.
Currently 521 with 20 people currently riding.

Three new docks have appeared in Cramond
Posted 5 years ago # -
Exciting times. One at Barnton Shops (technically not Cramond), one at the end of Gamekeepers Road and one on the foreshore by the island.
They will hopefully be quite useful as they are close to nice cycle routes. If they add some around the Glye now it will really kick of in Western Edinburgh.

Yes, spotted yesterday, Adrian. Great stuff.

A couple new docks closer to the centre as well with two on London Road/Hillside Crescent, one at Craigleith and two around Henderon Row/Dundas Street

Did I spot what looks like the markings for a new virtual hire location at Murrayfield Place? I was on the bus so didn’t get a chance to investigate.

New virtual hire point outside the zoo also.
From a purely selfish point of view this means I now have a hire point within a few minutes walk of my house and my use of the scheme is going to rocket.

And another one outside GuitarGuitar on St John’s Road at Drumbrae.

I went for a cycle through West Lothian on Sunday and saw a couple of cycle hire bikes a fair distance from Edinburgh.
Posted 5 years ago # -
New ones also at Balgreen tram stop and St John’s Road shops (outside Specsavers at the Clermiston Road end).
There may be others.....

You get a virtual dock! You get a virtual dock! Everyone gets a virtual dock!
I'm just hoping they can find somewhere close to Haymarket soon as I seem to be constantly cutting it close with trains!

It’ll be quite the job to seed the 19 empty docks with bikes today if the redistribution gang still only has access to a wee van. Lots of back and forth!
I hope they’re not quite done yet for this burst as the West End really needs some love. Sooo many people work between Haymarket and Lothian Road up the side streets that a little and often approach as used in Marchmont seems like it would be a success especially with the robust new provision along the A8

Noticed mat things down at the Dalry Lidl bikes.

Is Craigleith Road a new dock too? It's a shame it isn't in the retail park but given their management's history I'm not that surprised.

Two more on Corstorphine Road: outside the Forestry Commission and also at Pinkhill.

With all the excitement out west nobody noticed that one was added in Sciennes on Gladstone Terrace yesterday
Still no big drop off of bikes, just a few spots where usage has naturally picked up already (London Rd and New Town)
Maybe another batch tonight? They've been added into the system mid evening the past couple of days

Here comes the wave! High Riggs/Lauriston Place, Morrison Street, Wester Coates Terrace and Crichton Street so far

Playing spot the difference is becoming increasingly hard
Does anyone here have the talent to set up a twitter bot that tweets when a dock is added or removed?
Data is at https://edinburghcyclehire.com/open-data/realtime
Two more at Roseburn St and Murrayfield Tram
