Well that's terrible news all around. I was looking forward to seeing them in use en masse at the Fringe and thought the ebikes would be the key to getting general interest in trying them out as they were introduced. I think they've also halved the number of ebikes from initial announcements.

    a) I thought that was embargoed until Friday?
    b) Bicycles are not 'manual' they are 'pedal'.

EDIT: I actually thought it was Thursday. Eeeeeek!

Taxis to revert to black then to be "more suitable for the city"?

Red bikes would match New Town trousers.

Bike hire locations / docking stations:

A lot of huge gaps there, making these bikes more useful for temporary residents but I remain hopeful that the tendrils will spread once the scheme gets going.

I'm surprised the RIE won't be in the initial phase. Selfishly, probably, cos it'd be my local dock and loads of my bus journeys could be cycled in one direction.

Some of the blue ones, next phase are quite far outwith town centre

I'll have to cycle to my nearest docking station.

Not sure what to make of that.

Very odd not to have any docking stations in areas on the canal, or one in central Craigmillar/ off The Innocent. The NEPN is reasonably served by them.

Craigmillar Castle the place I think will benefit most in terms of tourist accessibility.

Light green pins are in odd locations, council buildings?

    Plus one light blue pin...

Need the details of the dockless capabilities to know what to make of it really. A smaller, better packed radius would seem the better idea as it is.

It also feels a little bit like they're dodging the poorer areas with it.

University of Edinburgh. Bristo Square, George Square, King's Buildings and Pollock Halls.

    Plus one light blue pin...

In the north east? That's the personal docking station of @morepathslease.

I was thinking those were "dark green" and yeah obviously university buildings. I mean the one in the North East in Leith surrounded by other docks and the one in Inch Park as "Light green"

With the "light blue" pin being in Grange and on review potentially actually being white.

The one at the zoo might be okay for me drop off at the college at Granton, probably only of any use for days where I'd other wise be getting a bus one way only. But does rely on a bike being available after a 10 minute walk.

Must admit, I've never convinced of the utility of this kind of hire scheme in Edinburgh and this map isn't exactly changing my mind.

The bulk of the red ones are within a few minutes walk of each other, the ones by the shore are presumably the Executive, can't imagine there is a great desire to cycle from there to the Parliament, the roads between those points are pretty horrific.

Haymarket to town might be useful but again I can't imagine there is going to be enough bikes to accommodate the commuter special.

    Hmm

Very much designed around Edinburgh uni ‘campus’ and civil service locations

Hopefully of more use to residents later

(Regular spots required on Leith Walk, Easter Rd, Dalry Rd, Gorgie Rd, in equal density to Clerk St)

The yellow pin on Old Dalkeith Road is properly esque of Simon Parker.

That transverse route route through Inch Park and Craigmillar Castle Park is utter fantasy.

Inch Park is mostly OK apart from speed bumps (a couple are flat at the sides, maybe for bikes) and a very occasional muppet in a car. The cycle path through the castle park is great, albeit missing a dropped curb and some signs (took me a year of cycling past it before realising what it was). If they were better connected across Old Dalkeith Road and more car reduction in Inch Park they could form half a good connection to KB.

If they were better connected across Old Dalkeith Road

    That's my point. It's mental.

A suggestion for a toucan crossing there was rejected last year.

I believe that there are medium-term plans for segregated infrastructure on Old Dalkeith Road, which would presumably include improvements for people crossing ODR here.

“A suggestion for a toucan crossing there was rejected last year.”

    Any details?

This has been ‘asked for’ for at least 20 years.

Previously it was ‘can’t be done on a 40mph road’.

Speed limit reduction obviously made no difference...

I'm sure they'll put in segregated infrastructure on Old Dalkeith Road in time for it to be ripped out to make room for the tram line to NRIE.

    Any details?

Was proposed (possibly by a member of this parish) and considered by the council, but didn't meet the criteria. There's some sort of quantified system fr deciding if one will be put in, taking into account pedestrian and traffic flow rates, speed limits etc. From memory, it wasn't even close to reaching the necessary score. I might manage to dig out the council report...

Not sure they'll be much fun on cobbles and hills if they are anything like the 'Boris bikes'. In Paris this month and there were lots of scruffy looking shared electric cars that seemed to get some use but the bigger attraction seemed to be dockless electric scooters from Limebike; wonder how they would manage on Leith Walk/Dundas Street/ (steep Edinburgh street of your choice). Its a shame our students never picked up the setts and threw them.
