Hire bike parked up here without a saddle, rear light flashing.

    What gives?

I used the new dock by the Raeburn today. Convenient for where I was going... but I can’t fogure out how you’re meant to get there from the road!

Looks like the bikes are getting used pretty heavily today with the combination of the free week and Open Streets - 90 cycling right now!

There is a bike in the Water of Leith directly underneath the Roseburn Viaduct. Three guesses how it got there :-( I’m surprised the Eastern side of the viaduct doesn’t have the same high fence as the other side. Potentially really dangerous.

Tried them for the first time yesterday with my wife. I found the handling super light, and more unfortunately they were just a bit too big for my wife to use confidently.

Still, if they sort out a dock close to my work, I'd use them if my bike was in for repair.

Used a hire bike to get home from work this evening. At Roseburn I saw two young guys on them, then on Pinkhill passed a family of three on hire bikes. The free week seems to have stimulated some interest.

I've noticed lots more groups out on the bikes which is great. A few outages and quite a bit of vandalism so far which is a shame (available bikes sitting at 275 right now rather than around 450).

I assume bikes without sales are marking the ends of unmarked docks. They look broken to the untrained eye though. I wonder if it would be feasible financially for the to put a sign into the seat post sing that it's a market bike.

The support desk has infuriatingly short hours, I really think they need to add a back shift to ensure cover up to 11pm every day.

I would agree with that. I did notice that the support opening hours seem to have been cut back recently, now closing at 8 pm, which is far too early (I regularly use a bike to get home around 10 pm, from a dockless station where I have sometimes had problems unlocking or locking a bike, and so you do need help to be available). And of course, many people might be using them even later after a night out.

I have also used bikes to get back from late night parties on at least a couple of occasions, which is so much handier than waiting for a night bus (it would be interesting to see the level of usage between 01:00 - 06:00, I'm sure it's not entirely negligible!).

The worrying thing is that if you have difficulties locking a bike after use, there is the dual risk of incurring extended hire charges and also of someone nicking the bike (for which, as far I can see, you are technically still liable, even after making best efforts (which seems a somewhat unfair contract term)).

I saw a young couple panting up the hill between Davidson Mains and Barnton on the NCN1 yesterday. I said "A bit heavy?" to the girl, who said yes but was grinning. I got the impression of inexperienced cyclists having fun - very cheap, and on a safe route.

I was out to Queensferry on one last month and much to my shock I had to push up some of Barnton on my way back. I have never thought of it as a bad section, the A90 is far more obviously hilly, but by goodness I was puffing.

It's very easy for 'us' to forget that the simple act of pedaling a bicycle is excellent fun.

Spotted a Just Eat Cycle submerged in a wet 'dock' just south of the towpath at Harrison Park East as I was walking along the canal just now. I have just managed to report this via the app...

@davecykl Usage is actually not too bad at night, usually sits between 6-8 trips an hour between 00:00-02:00 then goes down to ~3. Beats £3 for the night bus!

What do you reckon it'll be like on the hills between Carlisle & Old Reekie?

@HC. Hard work, although in your situation I think I'd be more worried about the skin around my ischial tuberosities than the muscles in my legs.

If it's any reassurance, I find that when I'm on the 30kg Elephant Bike, my heart bumps along in Zone 1 and it's difficult to make it do more than that. There's something about the riding style that means one just has to take it very easily.

Give yourself lots of time, pray for a strong tailwind and take lots of chamois cream...

Two burger bikes on WoL path Balerno. They might need to whizz back. Or is it still free?

I wonder if they'll ever discount that annual membership again - it was half price last Nov., in Black Friday, great deal.

Was at concert in Greyfriars Kirk last night. Lot of burger bike action including a young lad jumping all lights in fairly mad way to dock at boroughmuir. Forrest Road teeming with them despite cars parked in bike lane and indeed pavement.almost as if traffic ardent font work after 7pm sundays

"traffic ardent font work" - that sounds like a good combination for the next time I need a password.

Lots of hire bikes out and about in Portobello yesterday. All it needs is a sunny Sunday afternoon...

Saw loads out yesterday - NEPN, Seafield, Portobello. Lots of people who don't look like they normally cycle enjoying themselves. A couple on Seafield Road braving the road itself and looking terrified.

Used one after pub on Saturday night and headed for a dock with no bikes at it, turned out it was a porta-dock with no mats. Was a bit confusing to work out where it was actually meant to go/for app to register that the bike was at the location to return it.

A bike seemingly abandoned at end of the Christian Path at Windsor Place, but neatly parked.

From my limited experience drivers pass with more room when riding a JustEat bike than my own bike...

As if traffic wardens don't work Sundays after 7pm
