  1. Only about 5 of them in total sitting in all of the racks from the Kirkgate to the top of Leith Walk this morning. Where have they all gone?

Perhaps a post on the local I Love Leith FB group at the weekend might have the answer - a group of young n'er-do-wells busting the locking mechanisms off the Just Eat bikes in front of the Chinese supermarket on Leith Walk, in broad daylight, unperturbed by locals watching them do it. Apparently they scarpered when the police showed up, but reappeared when they left and continued trying to damage and make off with the bikes.

There’s a little gang I’ve seen roaming around quite a lot in the last week making noises towards the bikes. 15/16 year old boys, most notable one wearing a red hoodie with the hood up and knot tied

Numbers are starting to climb up! 244 available/in-use right now. Highest I’ve seen in a while

Officers say 860 secure cycle spaces will be provided and developers have indicated their willingness for the public bike hire scheme to be extended to the site.

"Willingness for it to be extended."

They should be paying for docks to be installed as part of the construction phase.

    @acsimpson: Indeed they should!

(What is the development being discussed, btw? (One of my pet interweb peeves is when folk post links but without giving the context... ;-( )

Also: almost no hire bikes available near the Meadows in any direction just now, they clearly need to add more! And there are 34 people cycling just now, which I think is the highest I have seen at one time (which is more encouraging, at least).

This particular one is the Cammo Fields development.

Utterly shameful. Hopefully the pattern will follow Glasgow and there will be a rapid drop in this kind of antisolcialism.

In case anyone was wondering why the St Andrew's House dock is out of action... all the locking mechanisms have been removed forcefully as well as an entire post!

That can surely only be a malicious attack designed to try and scupper the entire hire scheme?

Otherwise, why would a random vandal bother to break all of them?

Must admit I’ve not been at all impressed with the lightweight docking system

Too expensive for them to install many of them but so cheap they are trivially broken

A neighbour told me he'd seen one in the Water of Leith. Said the Just Eat guys were very quick to come out and pick it up.

Where have all the bikes gone? Only 202 out there.

Pretty good month, 14160 trips! More than the total number of trips in 2018.

Now imagine if we had a decent number of bikes...

The was 5 at Barnton this morning. Then 3 an hour later an then just 2 five mins after that. They are clearly getting plenty use out here.

Sure they weren't just getting pinched?

Some relatively long cycles from Barnton last month.

The annual pass is £45 instead of £90 today - not sure when offer ends, says it's "for one week only", celebrating World Environment Day.

I suspect the scheme is proving less profitable than was foreseen. Edinburgh is a hard place for bicyclists and bicycles.

Man I really should get into computer generated stats analysis

These would be really useful numbers to judge for each dock:

    Hours per month empty
Hours per month with <3 bicycles
Hours per month with <3 docking spaces
    Hours per month full

Any time a dock is in any of these bands it represents suppressed demand as there will be a loss of confidence in a bike either being able to be collected or dropped off and it may result in the rider chosing or being forced to not ride.

I think just now the majority of the scheme is running in the first two categories.

Looks like Hillside Crescent 1 has disappeared from the website/app. It was pretty popular last month so I imagine it's another vandalism victim (along with St Andrews House and Queensferry Road).

“Because of this, and for a mixture of other reasons we’ll be closing 22 of our virtual hire points by Friday 7 June.
However, ten of those will be reopened as permanent physical hire points later in 2019 and one will reopen on the weekend only. The other 11 points will close but will be kept under review.
We’re also adding an additional 30 physical hire points by September. These will be introduced in landmark areas around the city centre.”

Hm. Looks like Hillside Crescent 1 is the only point to close completely. The others are being replaced or marked "close and review" except for Cramond which will be weekends only. Is there a Hillside Crescent 2? Something showing on London Road so presume that's HC2?

Has the Regent Road station been withdrawn? Nothing showing on the map...

    Yep, also a virtual dock.

Hopefully the docks are replaced fairly quickly if they're closing tomorrow. Feel bad for anyone who has just signed up for an annual pass in Corstorphine!

The St Andrew's House dock on Regent Road was pretty badly damaged (I posted a picture a few posts up) but hopefully it's coming back.

I'm lucky enough to live within a 5 minute walk of four of the docks. Sadly, for the last couple of months, on average 2 or 3 of these docks have had no bikes, and the one(s) that do, will have 1 or 2 max.

On a recent journey from Southside to Leith, the first dock with a functioning bike was the City Chambers. That was the *9th* dock that I'd have tried on route.

As @klaxon says, this means it can't be relied upon for modal shift.

Back of the envelope numbers suggest they are haemorrhaging money. I hope I'm wrong though.
