Three thieved bikes on my way home on Friday evening. All moving, so difficult to report. I verbally admonished all the thieves.

Seems cycle hire vandalism is very much a global issue:

Chinese start-up Mobike has announced that it lost more than 200,000 bikes in 2019.
    https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-50946871

Recently, the Bycyklen system has been the victim of extensive vandalism on an unprecedented scale

    https://bycyklen.dk/en/news/operational-status/

Interestingly, in Copenhagen they're switching physical docks to virtual docks to prevent vandalism.

Looks like they've decided that putting hire points near schools isn't that bad after all, because the Gorgie one is right outside Tynecastle High.

I understand the Edinburgh scheme are in the process of replacing the locks on their bikes to something more robust.

    "right outside Tynecastle High."
Oooh, interesting. I shall have to investigate - that is close enough to home for me to potentially use one on the odd occasion.

    Some new docks:
    Duke Street at Easter Road
    Edinburgh Park Station
    Drumsheugh Place
    Bainfield/Boroughmuir HS

Nice to have something near Leith Links again. Hopefully it won't get trashed!

Edinburgh park station is good. I wonder if they'll have some at the gyle soon.

The Boroughmuir High School dock is even more convenient for bikes going in the canal than the one they removed from Gibson Terrace.

Incidentally, I just went a good couple of weeks, or maybe even longer, without seeing an abandoned or an illegally ridden Just Eat Cycle, which must be a personal record.

Talk in the chippy last night was of three blue and red flashing Burger Bikes abandoned nearby.

Kudos to the local youth for riding in that weather.

I'm a cycle hire newbie. I was just wondering, if there's any sort of problem, do I just message them on the app or do I have to phone them.

And if they detect any sort of problem would they message me or phone me?

    thanks

@mccolville0221 The live chat in the app is usually best, tends to only takes a few minutes to get a response.

I've never had them contact me about a trip but if there's any big changes they'll usually drop you a message in the app with a link to an article.

Edinburgh’s JustEat cycle hire scheme is adding 42 new hire points across the city after receiving a £500,000 cash boost.

The scheme, run on behalf of Transport for Edinburgh, was launched in September 2018 and currently has a fleet of more than 500 bikes. The funding from SP Energy Newtworks' Green Economy Fund will help take the total number of hire points across the network to 101 by spring this year.

Took them a while to get that press release out - they’re already at 97 docks.

Been to 60+ docks (some of which no longer exist (hello Leith Links).

Was planning on doing a day of going to all docking stations last year when there was only 40 or so, bigger endeavour now but will do it during the summer. The only tricky ones are the 2 behind locked gates, like the one on Grove St in the private apartments

@Try Cycle: A new Leith Links dock has recently been installed, at the foot of Easter Road. I haven't been past it, but judging from the map, it appears to be closer to the road junction and so would be less secluded and therefore would have more oversight from passing people and traffic, hopefully meaning less risk of vandalism.

No sign of any new dock in the potentially quite useful location of the Kirkgate shopping centre, sadly.

  18. Are there any trial codes on offer anywhere at the moment?

They might be handy for getting me from the Western General back to the bus routes on London Road tonight with Stockbridge being closed to traffic.

Its either that or I have to learn how to take the long way for a short cut on the available buses!

I presume they are not integrated into the price of a TfE day ticket yet?

Gave https://publictransport.io/cyclehire a quick refresh - you can now get trip data for a specific date range. Plus, if you're down with the kids, dark mode is supported.

Find incredibly interesting stats like there being 22 trips to/from Ocean Terminal on Christmas Day.

    @cyclealex nice work.

8400 trips this month with 9 days to go is impressive, considering the incredibly miserable weather. That's in comparison to 10200 in June 2019 and 4200 in Feb 2019.

Still wish there were some vaguely near my house, maybe they'll expand more if the vandalism/ joyriding comes down further

    @CycleAlex

Why were there 2697 trips on the 4th Feb? Compared to ~400 every other day in Feb.

That looks like an anomaly or erroneous data to me

I hope they're excluding undocks and redocks from the repair/restock teams.

There was a Burger Bike at the racks at Cameron Toll last night with the lights still flashing. Is that the pause mode or just someone taking a risk?

@neddie Yeah, something went wrong with their system on that day and it recorded 2000 trips from Crichton Street to Logie Green Road of all places. I’ve removed the data from the bar chart but it shows up in the line graphs for the moment since that’s pulled directly from their trip data.

@IWRATS If the lights are flashing it’s still on a trip - potentially expensive evening if it’s been dumped there.

As an extra feature, if you click on any of the docks in the map at the bottom you can see all the trips to/from there plotted on the map. Not very useful but it does look cool!

@cyclealex, thanks for a great site. Just one minor point is that each successive date query is added to the existing URL without removing the previous query. After a while browsing the site this can lead to a URL too long query.

@toomanybikes, The February numbers are unfortunately corrupted. (Appropriately for your username) there are reporting 2248 hires simultaneously leaving Crichton Street on the 4th of February. The first of these took about 20 minutes to arrive at Logie Green Road while the rest arrived every few seconds during the following night.

There are also another 70 simultaneous hires during the month, although most of those are only reported as 2 trips.

Checking back this seems to have been a problem since last November, although this is the first time a trip has been reported more than a single digit number of times.

Edit: That took me so long to write that a few more responses have since appeared in the thread

@Cyclealex, the map is very cool but is missing Logie Green Road and Crichton Street (as is the bar chart, presumably that's your fix). Something which is I suspect related to the 4th Feb funday.

6400 trips so far this Feb will still be an ~50% increase over this month last year, but not quite as impressive as I thought.. I saw one that was flashing as it should last night for the first time in a while, so the anecdata stacked up for an increase in rides, but perhaps not that big an increase..

need the ebikes to launch, but they seem to be consistently a few months away ad infinitum

@acsimpson I was hoping they would fix their data but alas it seems not so I've built a little fix (all should be displaying correctly now, including Crichton Street/Logie Green Road on the map). The middle graphs are somewhat usable now!

Perhaps the e-bikes will cost £10/hr as it'll come with your own security guard...

They do seem to be a more popular option post meridian? Thanks for the data. Nice graphs.

From my own experience, I usually get the bus into town in the mornings and cycle to work from princes st. However, it's rare there'll be a bike at St Andrews Sq when I'm passing (think they restock it around 8am). There's always bikes available from near the office in the evenings so that's why most of my trips are evening trips
