With all the bikes concentrated around work areas rather than the suburbs I can see there being some unfulfilled potential at that price. If I wanted to take a bike to visit someone out of town for a few hours then it could quickly cost more than the price of a day ticket. I realise they are aiming to keep the bikes in circulation but it's a shame they don't offer a reasonably priced longer hire.

@acsimpson, day hire will be £3, so less than a day ticket.
Posted 6 years ago # -
Isn't day hire is only £3 if you return the bike to a docking station (or within the dockless cordon?) every hour?
So someone who wants to use a bike to, say, go to the RIE, will either need to have a very short stay or pay £1 for every 30 minutes past their original hour. Even a relatively short visit to the hospital could lead to a bike cost greater than a dayticket for the bus.

I guess thats not really what its designed for, personally I can't see the use case in the way its been set up.

I agree. Hopefully the scheme will be successful enough that there'll soon be a docks at places like the RIE.

*makes horrified face* Well, that would render them fairly useless to the local population.

Indeed, that was my point. The only real use I can see for them at the current pricing is travelling between city centre offices (or possibly to Leith if government).
I guess we need to remember that their only source of income is adverts and rental charges. How many similar schemes receive no public money?

This bicycle looks like it has been abandoned in a verge
locationI sore it around 3 pm on cycle back to edinburgh. Before one of the axle bolts fell of my rear axle after stopping in Plean for lunch and had to get replacement bus train home.

Spotted fellow on Edinburgh hire bike banging into geography dept. Last week. I was wondering how come? Given alleged start date. Some other chaps I was chatting to in city chambers were alluding to. All was explained via spokes I think. Ed Uni getting a trial.

Sponsor announced as Just Eat: https://www.scotsman.com/news/name-revealed-for-new-edinburgh-bike-scheme-1-4794583
"Following a sponsorship deal with Just Eat, who are sponsoring the Edinburgh Cycle Hire Scheme for the next 3 years, the scheme will be known as Just Eat Cycles."

Takeaway bikes?
Posted 6 years ago # -
"Just Eat Cycles" - I assume this is some healthy living slogan mis-translated from Mandarin into English using google translate.
Posted 6 years ago # -
Related: This critical study of bike share scheme got a bit of press (Daily Mail, Times):
I haven't read it but did note that one of his key points was that they could distract from building proper joined up infrastructure, which the negative press articles didn't really pick up on.

Just Eat also sponsor dublinbikes, I think, but the dublinbikes name predates the sponsorship deal so was retained (i.e. they are Just Eat dublinbikes). Missed opportunity for Edinburgh to have a proper name…

Festivélo. Bleedin' obvious.

Edinburgh hire cyclists wondering 'where the hell do we go from here?'.

Don't go... Just Eat. The catchy new slogan.

@IWRATS Two people walking their bikes. Edinburgh!
Posted 6 years ago # -
Just out of shot are several vehicles parked in "pedestrianised" Castle Street.
Posted 6 years ago # -
One of which belongs to the photographer and another of which was used to drop of the bikes. The models meanwhile walked from their nearby agency's office.
/cynicismEdit: the photographer is clearly inexperienced with bikes. They didn't even line up the cranks and valve caps.

That photo looks like it's been taken against a painted-backdrop.
Either that or the photographer used a spectacularly poor camera.
Notice how the subjects are perfectly lit as well - no shadows. It's a conspiracy everyone!

I can't get over the juxtaposition of the bikes and the tram. It's genuinely chilling.

The polis offering me bike registration today (done that twivce and both times never heard back, so was slightly tetchy) had a go on the just eat bike. She found it tough going as heavy and in second on the flat.. I did a survey and was given free Sustrans lights. All in the basement at work. Also many of the bells I gave away before so will be taking orders for Xmas bells. They are big silver tringers
Posted 6 years ago # -
Uh oh. Gembo has a supply of bells. Can we suggest the next PY is at a location we don't want to go back to ;-)
Posted 6 years ago # -
@hankchief, fear not, the staff turnover is very quick so there will be no memory if we Ring Dem Bells

For info
https://edinburgh.org/travel/just-eat-cycles/Just Eat Cycles
The scheme launches on Monday 17th September – stay tuned to find out more about the launch day activities. Initially there will be a number of cycle hire points across the city including: City Chambers, Kings Buildings, Bristo Square, Lauriston Place, Waverley Bridge and Fountainbridge to create an initial network of key origins and destinations in the city. Further hire points will be added as the scheme grows.
To stay updated visit edinburghcyclehire.com for more information.
How does it work?
1) Just download our app by searching ‘Just Eat Cycles’ on the App Store or Google Play
2) Follow the instructions to sign up with your mobile phone number.
3) Input your payment card details or voucher code (if you have one)
4) You’re now ready to hire a bike! You can also sign up and buy a subscription through the website at edinburghcyclehire.com, but you will still need the app to hire bikes.
How do you hire a bike?
Once you have registered, the app shows physical and virtual Cycle Hire Points:
Physical Cycle Hire Points have docking points for the bike to be wheeled in and out of, and Virtual Cycle Hire Points are indicated by markings on the pavement. These are ‘geo fenced’ locations where you can end your hire and leave the bike propped on its stand, you can also hire bikes from our virtual docks.
When you’re close to a Cycle Hire Point, the app will give you the option to “unlock bike” - tap on this if you want to hire a bike. It will then tell you which bike yours is and that’s it: you are ready to go!
How much does it cost?
- £1.50 for a single trip of up to 1 hour – each 30 minutes thereafter is £1 extra.
- £3 for a day subscription, allowing unlimited journeys of up to 1 hour each in a 24 hour period.
- For £90 you can sign up for an annual membership, allowing unlimited ‘1 hour’ hires for 365 days.Catriona, one of the scheme's star testers, had this to say about her experience so far:
Over the last few weeks I've been lucky enough to try out the few test bikes for Edinburgh's cycle hire scheme. With a docking station just outside my office, they've been really handy when I've been running late for a meeting, when I've wanted a bit of fresh air on a journey, or when I've just wanted to arrive in low-carbon style!
I really like how sturdy the bikes are: they feel very solid when you're riding them, and it makes me feel more confident when navigating the city center streets and taking 'primary position' (cycling in the general flow of traffic, in the center of a lane) when there isn't a bike lane to use.
I'm also a big fan of the 'no muss, no fuss' approach they bring to me getting about the city: it takes seconds to see if a bike is available, to unlock it, and then to be on my way! And when I get to my destination, I can return it to a dock without worrying about locking it up in a suitable place.

I especially like this bit:
"makes me feel more confident when navigating the city center* streets and taking 'primary position' (cycling in the general flow of traffic, in the center of a lane) when there isn't a bike lane to use."
Yep, you nailed it! No infrastructure. Riding in the middle of the lane with loads of angry drivists. Vehicular cycling. Rock
on!*American spelling - why?

Nobody in their right mind rides a bike like this in Edinburgh. Anybody know what the gear stack is? (I invented 'gear stack' and wish it to become the hip term for a set of gear ratios.)
Posted 6 years ago # -
@IRWATS
And is "gear stack overflow" when your chain goes over the big cog and into the spokes?
