    @steveo

    I don't have a fax machine either. I might still have the 5x4 plate camera I built from odds and ends at my mum's though.

    Hmmm - the Edinburgh Cycle Hire website is a static page saying "We're now testing - follow us for updates". There are links to facebook, instagram and twitter - two of which return error messages. Not filling me with confidence.

    "...there will be a number of cycle hire points across the city including: City Chambers, Kings Buildings, Bristo Square, Lauriston Place, Waverley Bridge and Fountainbridge to create an initial network of key origins and destinations in the city." I would agree they are key origins and destinations - there's just the small problem of getting between them in one piece.

    Mmm-hmmm.

    If you ride round those docking stations this is the altitude profile;

    Apart from the haul up from Waverley Bridge (Bank Street and the Mound? Tram Tracks and Bridges?) that is shall we say atypically flat.

    My laptop currently has no battery. Probably should get a new one right enough. Liking the idea of turning it into a massive mobile phone.

    "Kings Buildings, Bristo Square, Lauriston Place" also "Fountainbridge".

    So, they are targeting students? Hm.

    They will need to add some places to make it attractive to non-student visitors and tourists: George Street, West End, somewhere in Leith, somewhere further East than Waverley Bridge (maybe near Dynamic Earth?).

    How about a big docking station on the island in the centre of the Picardy Place gyratory? (Laughter).

    Physical Cycle Hire Points have docking points for the bike to be wheeled in and out of, and Virtual Cycle Hire Points are indicated by markings on the pavement. These are ‘geo fenced’ locations where you can end your hire and leave the bike propped on its stand, you can also hire bikes from our virtual docks.

    So, are the ‘proper’ docks just to initially advertise the scheme and the future is virtual?

    Hmmm, most places with virtual stations seem to end up with bikes littering the place.

    The south of Edinburgh is a wasteland with KB as the oasis in the desert.

    Given that Dalkeith Road is thronged with ERI staff on bikes I'm surprised the hospital hasn't got a dock. Or maybe the PFI service company didn't want anyone chiseling their car park money?

    You need docks roughly 5 mins WALK apart to make it useable. Mainly because if you arrive at a site where there are not docks in a purely dock system you need to be able to goto the next one and not be miles from where you wanted to end up. This is why the virtual ones are helpful I guess.

    They've put up a video with all of the points they intend to have by the end of the year: https://twitter.com/cyclehire_edi/status/1038046971074957312

    Wonder if the purple locations will be virtual docking stations. Annoying the map only shows north of Newington though. I wonder if KB is likely to be one of very few docking points in the south..

    They've replied to someone on facebook who was asking if there were going to be any in the west of the city. They said that there would be some, and specifically mentioned Gogarburn.

    Given that, and the fact the map shows them going all the way to Leith docks, I'm going to be rather surprised and seriously angry if there's nothing south of the RIE, let alone south of KB.

    It'd be gie annoyin tae be the only pairt o the city nae included, no?

    Even if the only fowk fa end up usin em are aaredy cyclists, they're still gie useful. If I've jist pit my bike in for a service, I'd raither spend £1.50 and cycle back hame on een o ese bikes than pay £1.70 for a bus.

    They're also useful for visitors - fan I wis in London for a puckle days earlier is year, I averaged ower 10 miles a day on them. Granted, I'm nae a normal visitor, but there mist be plinty o cyclists visitin Embra fa wid prefer tae get aboot be bike.

    Here's how to map bike docking stations on Openstreetmap (for those who already know the OSM basics - everyone else can ignore this technical post):
    https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:amenity=bicycle_rental

    Does this scheme have an official long-term name (which will outlast any sponsor)? There's a tag in the OSM data to record this. Mappers in London use 'network=tfl_cycle_hire ' rather than the sponsor's name. That makes sense to me.

    I know in some plans laid out a few months back, they intended a dock at Craigmillar Castle and at the RIE but they were to be among the last wave of proposed placements. Which I had a mild rant-ette about on here at the time cos the RIE would be my local dock.

    Surely Sheriffhall P&R should get one?

    These bikes are quite heavy. Getting them up to Craigmillar castle may be a challenge

    "They said that there would be some, and specifically mentioned Gogarburn."

    Seems a sensible idea: The biggest office building in Edinburgh with (probably) the largest BUG, surrounded by some of the worse congestion.

    (I'll avoid getting into a turf war and make no comment on the position in South Edin)

    I had hoped it might be possible to take one of these bikes up Ben Nevis or the Beach na Ba. Alas 1 hour isn't quite long enough.
