Finally managed to get on a Voi bike after being away for a while. Smooth sailing, the reservation feature is very handy too - especially when you’re in a group. General feeling from my friends and I was that we could do with hundreds now, not fifty.

The current zone is also quite frustrating, I was riding near the edge and had a couple of moments where the GPS was off and decided I was outside. Killing all assist coming up the ramp to Dundee Street was particularly vengeful…

I noticed my bike then turned up in Glasgow later, which is presumably the current charging/maintenance area. A two hour round trip for a small van of bikes each time they need charged feels… very suboptimal.

I assumed they had a swappable battery and maintenance team would just do that? Maybe not.

    Word is:

    120 bikes out now
    400 by end of December
    Aim for 2000 by 2026

Bit secretive on any expansion of the area covered

    120?

Only if more than half have disappeared or need fixing.

There are about 30 bikes showing on the app just now. I doubt more than a handful are in use at this time, so whoever told neddie that there are 120 is misinformed.

    400?
    2000??

I'll believe it when I see it. (I do not expect to see it)

Maybe that was their launch numbers for when they take over Glasgow. If they're running both schemes and Glasgow is larger then it would be just about acceptable for whole bikes needing attention to go to a workshop more over that way, but if they're currently moving whole bikes around just to recharge them rather than just swapping batteries it adds a lot of motor vehicle miles to the system.
Three outside the zone this morning, all with locations which could even be inside residential premises.

    Now 43

If app reliable, seems more put out this morning (or had battery swaps and now charged enough to be ‘available’).

It's disappointing that Voi doesn't seem to have a presence on social media like Bluesky or Facebook (I did hold my nose and check X as well: not there either AFAICT). If they did then people could engage with them directly via those channels, rather try to fathom out what's happening from rumour and speculation on local forums.

The so-called "blog" on their web site is largely a waste of bytes. (The articles posted there don't even have date stamps.)

(Now someone is going to tell me that Voi is active on Instagram and/or Tik Tok. Well, thanks, but I won't be going there. I have dipped a digital toe into Instagram a few times, mainly following links sent to me or found on other forums, but I could make neither head nor tail of it. And from what I've heard about Tik Tok, and the little I've seen first hand, it's clearly not aimed at people capable of critical thinking.)

@voitechnology on Twitter posted once when they launched, but acknowledged no replies, nor a DM asking if they could join BlueSky. There's a similar "excited for Glasgow!" post, too. I once spoke to an apparent human for a bit after I got past the chat robot in the app but there's nothing like the level of human involvement visible from the start with JustEat.

Yesterday I spotted two Neds on one bike bombing down Leith Walk. One seated and one standing. Nice to design the bike so the Neds can do this.

"120 now" may mean "now" as in the next few days, couple of weeks. Not necessarily "right now". But as you say, let's see...

This is Edinburgh timescales after all - "now" could mean 5 years!

Suggests ‘more’ in use on nice day, or more out of action

I was cut up by two youths on these bikes while I was cycling towards the eastern end of The Meadows. One on a big bike, one on a small bike. They came bombing past me, amber-gambled their way across the pedestrian crossing and vanished along the cycle route.

Two non-bams zig-zagging their way westbound through a ragged queue of people waiting to board an eastbound 44 bus on Shandwick Place yesterday.

Pity the geo-fencing can't detect when the bikes are being ridden (entirely unnecessarily) on the pavement.

found a hill it couldn't get up yesterday - little vennel between Dunedin St and Broughton Rd (EH7 4JJ). It's about 60m long, Strava says it's 16.4% at the top, I got within 5m of the end and had to get off and push.

Voi now shows up on Google Maps:

I saw a good 10+ people out on Vois when cycling last night, all in groups. Curious if the group ride feature in the app makes a difference since whoever you’re riding with doesn’t need the app.

I wonder if youths are using group ride, like the three I saw several times between Waverley Bridge, Leith St and London Road, who appeared to not be going anywhere in particular but were propping at least one used bike up approximately in a parking zone with at least one of then manipulating a phone whilst so doing.

Anyone think of a reason why they don't have a rear rack? Ones I've used south of the wall had, not sure if its common or not. But feels like something that would make sense if could stick a pannier on it.

I can't remember ever using a bikeshare bike with a rear rack - where did you see those?
