Ah
No
Now one off Leith Walk too!

A few of Vois I walked past heading home last night weren't doing too well with the gusts. I did see at least ten bikes unavailable as well as the ~55 in the app, so it does seems like we've got more bikes.
Hopefully more news on expansion/densification soon now that we're on to the second month.

does anyone know the time-frame for the review of this trial area and then the hopeful expansion. I would quite like to be able go north of the WoL.

@desert rat - seems to be complete radio silence from Voi and the Council. There is a web form where you can suggest parking spots:
https://render.jotform.com/230523910816047
Sure there was something similar for the Just Eat scheme. Never heard of any suggestions being turned into actual docking stations though.

My experience of Voi so far has been an absolute communications black box, so reassuring to see Cllr Booth raising need for half-yearly updates to TEC so we at least hear something; the lead CEC officer on the project has been much more helpful in querying / reporting issues.

@frenchy the Serco bikes plus the Nextbikes plus the Beryls had a very small front rack to take a small rucksac, and no rear racks
This is intentional to make it decidedly uncomfortable to ride on a front carrier, & probably impossible to ride on the backVoi has very little involvement in the management & maintenance of the fleets, this is contracted to Velogik, who are closely linked to a now incorporated operation MotionForward which was a trading operation for the charity BikeforGood Velogik was the contractor for Nextbike in Glasgow and is also doing Beryl in Leeds. I suspect they will continue with Voi in Glasgow
Velogik does tend to recruit and train locally, which has the advantage of good community engagement, and thus community 'ownership' as a way to police abuse
I'll post on residential parking later but would highlight the inadequacies of the headlong rush to provide the Cyclehoop Fietstrommels give that they are horribly space inefficient, ands the variants on the Beta (Orion) and Tulip (Falco) can park up to 24 bikes on the same footprint as the bike hangar stores 6!
The same applies to the use of prop stands for dockless bikes and the unholy mess that results with disorganised parking and bikes falling over
I've an image of before & after when the modular Beta system was delivered to a site in NL. It uses the principle of getting the bikes weight to hold it upright and in neat rows as also used on Class 153 cycle carriages
With an electronic lock (MOSA) secured to the bike stand a cycle can be locked with the unit having a tamper alarm and unique RFID/QR code for the user's phone or bus pass/staff i/d card
I need to discuss this appropriately if anyone can PM a good current contact with Edinburgh & other councils
Already in touch with Nick Brown UK CEO of Velogik
Would also like to get Lothian Ridacard (& app?) unlocking bikes along with NEC (Saltire Card) - NEC can already unlock Enterprise Car Club for hires, to deliver a proper Total Mobility deal
If any CCE folk into Population Health work as well do PM as I'd love to see over 60's making regular cycle trips as an alternative to catching the bus, and give that the bike trips are logged, measuring the health impact for older people cycling regularly. This is also a 'soft' nudge towards driving less for those who may eventually be told to stop driving

Since then, a further 50 e-bikes have been introduced due to “huge” demand from residents.
Plans to expand the scheme into other parts of the capital and increase the fleet to 800 bikes by the end of the year remain on track, while future measures could include the introduction of bike parking attendants and the conversion of some car parking spaces into cycle parking top avoid pavements becoming cluttered.

I find some of that hard to believe…
This is likely true -

“If we want this to succeed in the long run, we have to get the wider community on board and be supportive of it. We’re still at the very early stages of doing that.”

I'll re-send their useless contact email address the recommendation to not take up bike rack spaces with their stand-equipped bikes, citing their own photo in that article showing one on a rack in George Square.
I wonder if they're including the neds' jaunts in "15,000 individual trips".
"We’ve not had anything outside of the ordinary in terms of vandalism, that type of stuff. We’ve seen some reports of people mentioning it but in terms of lasting damage or what we’ve been able to see and capture or had concrete information through the police, we’ve not seen anything" feels a bit LA LA LA CAN'T HEAR YOU though waiting for concrete information through the police might be quite a high bar for confirming misuse.Posted 2 months ago # -
Currently 20 available
Either high usage, or bikes unavailable(?)

Strong agree on that. There are few enough cycle spaces as it is*. They should definitely be re-allocating car parking spaces.
It's an interesting article, they're many of the right things - just need to see if they can deliver on it.
* I keep https://cityofedinburgh.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=e85eeb014eca4ecfb5526ce31932d1f4&utm_source=substack&utm_medium=email bookmarked on my phone, which shows all the public bike parking spaces. It looks a lot, but when you're trying to find a space it's clear that there really isn't enough and that there are huge gaps, especially in the New Town.

I’ve been keeping photos of Voi bikes taking up rack spaces with a mind to raise at some stage - potentially via TEC when a six month report comes back to them.
Posted 2 months ago # -
Hopefully once parking locations have been locked in they can be marked on the ground to keep things more organised.
@pringlis Shameless self-promotion of cycleparking.net which also covers non-CEC locations UK wide.

Only a dozen bikes on the app just now
Something is going on
Posted 2 months ago # -
Now 8!?
Posted 2 months ago # -
Currently 15 on app
Which suggests a technology problem, or a lot of ‘missing’ bikes
Posted 2 months ago # -
Looks like it’s another charging issue. I just had the last ride on a Voi bike before it went into low-power mode and saw ~9 red Vois on the way to the Meadows.
Posted 2 months ago # -
“Looks like it’s another charging issue“
Is that “technology” or ‘delivery’?
Posted 2 months ago # -
Always seems to be a lot of bikes with zero charge up at Bruntsfield. I suspect it is a 'delivery' issue, with batteries not being swapped out quickly enough. The bikes really do seem to be well used and I imagine charge only lasts a day or so. Hopefully easy to sort this out better logistics, but it is probably limiting scheme use at the moment.
This just adds to my feeling that the scheme was launched too quickly after Voi were announced as operators, a few more weeks to sort out staffing and logistics would have made sense.
Posted 2 months ago # -
Agree. Clearly not being resourced seriously at present. They must be happy enough with their usage data from ‘good availability’ and not care about having periods of time where nearly the whole fleet is unusable. In the meantime, users completely unable to form useful habits around routinely reaching for one.

27 including 3 outliers
So definitely ‘demand’ for bigger area
Presumably power assist is off, but not ‘lock’?
Posted 2 months ago # -
Now showing 7 bikes at Bruntsfield Terr
Presume had battery swaps…
Posted 2 months ago # -
All gone already! Had to walk down the hill.
7/8 trips per bike per day is very impressive, I believe the goal for most schemes is 3/4. I think there’s easily room for another hundred bikes just within the current zone.
As Bakky says, the uncertainty of bike availability is the biggest struggle now. I’ve had a few trips where I’ve been able to ride in only to find zero bikes around on the way back. The reserve feature does help somewhat since you don’t end up walking to a bike that disappears.
Posted 2 months ago # -
Yes - reservation feature essential, though I do wish it would surface what kind of bike you're reserving - i.e. Explorer Light vs Explorer 4. I have a strong preference for the larger bike where possible (largely ergonomics, I am 6' 6" and the max saddle height on the Light is lower).

Now FIVE
Inc 2 outliers
?????
Posted 2 months ago # -
I wonder if it is as simple as there being no, or very few, staff working weekends to swap batteries. The limited number of bikes are well used and all start running out of charge within a couple of hours of each other.
Posted 2 months ago # -
Could well be. Word was ahead of local Customer Success Manager hire the scheme was being managed by existing Voi staff - who no doubt want to get home during the weekend.
(I know the highly knowledgeable @Tulyar keeps telling us this is being managed by Velogik - but I don't understand if that's already the case why we repeatedly have a fifty+ fleet falling to a handful of available bikes).

9 including 2 outliers
Posted 2 months ago # -
I'm routinely seeing these in use on my walks and cycles within city centre at all times of day now, whereas for a while I was only tending to see them parked. I should really give one a go!
