CityCyclingEdinburgh was launched on the 27th of October 2009 as "an experiment".
IT’S TRUE!
CCE is 16years old!
Well done to ALL posters
It soon became useful and entertaining. There are regular posters, people who add useful info occasionally and plenty more who drop by to watch. That's fine. If you want to add news/comments it's easy to register and become a member.
RULES No personal insults. No swearing.

Glasgow's cycle hire scheme will go fully electric from the middle of next month, the city council has announced.
Voi Technology UK will take on the scheme from early November, replacing the current bikes operated by nextbike.
The city currently has 1,030 non-electric nextbikes and 209 e-bikes but the new deal will see them all replaced with a minimum of 1,000 e-bikes.
It comes two months after Voi launched a similar scheme in Edinburgh, with an initial 50 bikes expected to increase to 800 over time.

Currently 52 - 2 outliers
Constant unknowns
No. in action - presume not many
No. needing charged - presumably quite a few, unless there is an overnight battery swap process (or better batteries)
Three escapees, of which two are at the OT tram stop, one of which has a wee green "wrapped present" mark on the icon and turns out to be a "discounted vehicle - unlock it free of charge and enjoy three free riding minutes" - is this them now trying to persuade helpful citizen users to return stray bikes to the still-limited-after-six-weeks central area?
“is this them now trying to persuade helpful citizen users to return stray bikes“
Yes/no
Wouldn’t get far in 3 min
And (presumably) no way of guaranteeing bike would go in right direction.
36 inc 6 out of approved zone.
At least some people like the ‘long distance’ transport facility.
Presumably the geofenced ’power off’ function is operating?
Now four outside the zone with the enticement.
Newly broken by The Edinburgh Minute on Bluesky:
Just in: Voi is increasing its Edinburgh cycle hire trial scheme from 50 bikes to 340 bikes. So far 5,800 riders have clocked up 60,000km across 21,700 trips since September. Boundary will expand on Friday 31/10 to include Holyrood Park, Meadowbank, Bonnington, Leith + Newhaven.
Seems odd not go down Inverleith Row and include the Botanics.
one at Ocean Term today. I've taken one of out the geofence and they are hard to pedal, so kudos to whoever got it that far.
Really @Dessert Rat. ? I took one off some schemieradges pulling wheelies through the lights at Baleernoo and cycled it to @Dave McCraw and his leaf blower on the canal. Through was downhill and wind behind. Still five miles.
“I took one off some schemieradges“
Just like that?
Did you have a conversation about how they unlocked it??
“
The council said it would continue to monitor the scheme with Voi, but plans remained on track for “full coverage of the city” by the end of the year.
“
Ocean Terminal escapee still there this morning.
Do these schemes ever offer a "bring an abandoned bike back" reward/credit scheme? Or maybe too open to abuse.
“
50 bikes from the Swedish company Voi have been rolled out since September 3rd, with this number set to expand up to 800 by the end of the year (if all goes well).
Edinburgh scrapped the previous public bike hire service, Just Eat Cycles, in 2021 after just three years due to theft and vandalism issues, with bikes reportedly often thrown into the picturesque Water of Leith.
The scheme, which the council intended to be self-financing, ended up costing the city an eye-watering £1.8 million.
“
The "fact" that the Serco scheme cost the city £1.8 million is a myth.
The £1.8 million is what the Council budgeted to support the scheme over three years. £800,000 in 2021-22, and £500,000 each in 2022-23 and 2023-24.
The Serco scheme closed on 17 September 2021. I suspect none, or very little, of the budgeted funds were ever spent as the scheme was obviously winding down through that period of financial year 2021-22, while contract extension negotiations were ongoing.
A contract extension could not be agreed as the Council weren't willing to fund one-off security and other upgrades (estimated at £1.172 million) and and ongoing annual subsidy estimated to be £1.16 million - figures based on zero sponsorship income and rider income of £0.4 million per year.
A perfectly legitimate decision for the Council to make - but claims of the Serco scheme costing the taxpayer £1.8 million are false.
I was in Paris last week and spotted Voi e-bikes with "€2.99 for 24h" adverts on them. Is anything similar available in Edinburgh?
There's only a 45 minutes over 24h for £2.99 pass in the Edinburgh price list. All passes have a set number of minutes.
Huh, hadn't even occurred that the advert might be for a fairly limited cycling time over 24h. How naive of me.
Thanks!
Two outside Meadowbank Sainsbury. I might pop past them this morning to see if they're either blocking the narrow path round the trolley garage or the insufficient and stupidly-shaped racks.
I hadn't spotted before that the minute bundle passes are supposed to be valid across the UK. That could come in very useful for train trips.

No one cycles in the rain…
Shout out to whoever managed to get a Voi bike to the airport.
Still curious at the decision to expand as far as Newhaven etc rather than more gradually on all sides to encompass more of Marchmont/Dalry/Polwarth etc.
Tram-assisted?
I've not tried to take one out of the zone yet, so have only felt their unassisted weight when the motor on one gave up intermittently going up round Queen's Drive.
“
UPDATE just in: Voi says it plans to increase its Edinburgh e-bike fleet size to 800 by the end of the year, "to match the huge demand for e-bikes in the city".

Now 61
Inc one at airport
52 at present, 0 out of zone; no sign of either the increased zone nor fleet increase to 340 slated for today.
Now at 68 bikes, and new zone is active including go-slow areas and a prohibition on Arthur’s seat other than High Rd
Nearly 90 now!
(There’s still one at the airport)
And the app is working now so that when u click on the parking places’ photos they don’t disappear!
