Availability has consistency been abysmal on Friday/Saturday nights. Did someone just forget to sign the charging contract for Fri-Sun?

Solemnly looked at the 10+ dead bikes I walked past just now, longing for a quick ride home.

Had a Voi powered evening out yesterday - they are a great, fun way to get about town. The bikes are super popular, lots of empty 'docks' and loads of people using them. There is clearly a problem with keeping batteries charged, as there seemed to be as many (or more) bikes out of service than available. Seems like they still have to properly sort out the logistics of running the service.

Will be sending this over to Voi contacts at CEC later on, and publishing links to it tomorrow; I have a couple of screenshots to add where the app depicts parking in cycle racks.

I would have had my first opportunity to use a bike on Saturday night. But there were no bikes available within a 10 minute walk off Nicolson Street. The largest cluster seemed to be easy down at the coast.

There were however a lot of bikes being actively ridden.

“The largest cluster seemed to be easy down at the coast.“

That was certainly the case last week - notably two clusters on North Fort Street.

Now about 45 most south of Princes St.

In 1995 the CPH City Bikes were tracked to gather data
On average each bike was used 8 x day & for most healthy hire bike schemes this seems to be a tipping point between a bike available & a bike famine
For this reason many schemes offer 30 minutes free so that bikes keep circulating & hire hubs filled. In Barca I saw a user waiting for an incoming return hire, suggesting that the system was operating at the limits for delivering a good level of service

This had a few metrics to play with for example the number of registered users vs number of available bikes with a diversity factor that can be fine tuned to reflect the social, employment & other breakdowns of the user profiles. Events plus key traffic flows have particular impacts & solutions, so that the 124 bike hire docks at London Waterloo see over 500 bikes hired out in the morning & 500 coming back at night. This requires 2-3 staff moving bikes out & back to a storage vault under the station

So some thoughts for a debate & session with Voi?

Ahh - Voi are starting their Glasgow roll-out today, so all resources have probably been redirected there. Seems...a sub-optimal way of doing things.

    Yes

    One bike showing.

    Currently about 90 in Ed.

I can understand the launch here was less than satisfactory - last minute decision on operator by CEC.

But, not like they are an inexperienced company.

About 25 operations in England and vast numbers across Europe.

    2022

Voi reached a significant milestone with 100 million rides and the launch of our 100th city. We introduced the Voiager 5, a safer, more durable e-scooter with a modular design for easier maintenance and part reuse. We expanded our parking assistant feature, ensuring proper parking and addressing recurring issues. Additionally, we secured re-tenders in markets like France and Denmark.

1,000 Voi e-bikes are being rolled out across the City of Glasgow for use by residents, visitors and everyone in between. Here’s how it’ll work and what it means for you.

From November, a fleet of up to 1,000 Voi e-bikes will be available across Glasgow, replacing the NextBikes and bringing quick, convenient and emissions-free transport to the city, with the added boost of an electric-assist motor.

Glasgow 16p per minute or you can buy a £2.99 pass for 30 minutes. Free unlocking for the first three months.

We get a better deal in Edinburgh at 11p per minute - although I wonder if/when free unlocking will end here. Looking at the app it seems we would pay 49p per unlock, although unlocks are 'free' if you have a pass.

Mrs N and I tried the bikes for the first time before all the rain.

We got about 4 metres to the other side of the road before Mrs N decided the bike was too heavy and she couldn't handle it. So the bikes went straight back to the dock they were taken from. Total cost of rides 44p.

Do I get a prize now for the world's shortest Voi ride?

@neddie - Mrs Morningsider had that problem with the 'full size' Voi bike. She does like the lighter, small-wheeled version though. Have to admit that I do too. Seems nipper and doesn't have the obvious gear jump that the bigger bike has.
