Gridlocked in Morningside at the moment. Every parking spot is over capacity (15 in the 10 capacity parking spot at the clock), so it's not possible for anyone to end a trip in the area. Definitely need more parking areas to spread the bikes out.

There was one somewhere this morning (possibly the Wishaw Tce zone) where the only bike at that spot had three free minutes. Elsewhere, at-capacity spots had no incentives. It's not the way I'd run things.

Now that the new-ish city bike scheme has finally started to cover an actually reasonably useful area, I'm thinking of giving it a go.
I'm too lazy (sorry) to wade through this whole thread to find out the details, is the price plans (etc) information on the web somewhere, or do you have to actually install the app to find out the full details and whether it will be suitable/affordable for your intended use?
The Council itself doesn't exactly make it easy to find out about, either: there's absolutely zero mention of it in the cycling section of the website…
https://www.edinburgh.gov.uk/cycling-walking
(It's a bit Rule 2 that it pretty much comes down to the cycling community to actually promote this service to the public at large - Spokes, etc, should really be sending an invoice for services provided…)

You can find the main details here but hire wise and for the specific bundles pricing, it’s app only. At least you can then use any Voi scheme around the UK/Europe than needing an Edinburgh exclusive app, I suppose.
I’ll shamelessly add my referral link where we get £5 credit each.

The Voi website is rubbish - best to download the app.
Looks like the free unlocks have ended. Now 49p to unlock a bike. This complicates pricing a bit, as there are a variety of passes available, as well as the 11p per minute pay as you go price (plus 49p unlock).

Something I wasn't aware of until today which may interest others here or their relatives is the Voi Equitable Access scheme which provides a range of discounts, up to 50%, on subscriptions for people on low incomes, NHS staff, higher education students staff, etc.
Disadvantaged users, including low-income individuals, refugees, asylum seekers, people with disabilities and those aged 60 and over, are eligible for a 50% discount on minute bundles and subscriptions.
NHS staff, Blue Light Card holders, military personnel and veterans qualify for a 20% discount on minute bundles and subscriptions.
Students, apprentices and staff at higher education institutions qualify for a 50% discount on minute bundles and subscriptions.

This can be significant for a lot of (potential) users, but how are they promoting it?

Taking the whole fleet out of action for a software update is a bold move... I assume if you're mid-ride it won't lock up!

What time is 12am? AFAIK, there is only 12-noon, 12-midnight, 00:00 or 12:00 !

As with the Just Eat bikes, the VOIs can apparently detect when I'm using them for something time-critical rather than just going for a random spin. The one I reserved at Links Gardens disappeared before I got there, so I had to run (negating the "I'll be less sweaty in the dentist's horrible warm waiting room if I go on an e-bike") to the bottom of Easter Road, then go up Easter Road (with normal lights and extra lights at the top) rather than Restalrig Road, then because I'd chosen a big one rather than a little one, it kicked into the high gear going up the steep bit of the Pleasance from Holyrood Road, despite the motor having already discovered going up Abbeyhill that it wasn't prepared to assist up steep gradients today.

12pm == 12:00 == 12-noon
12am == 00:00 == 12-midnightThis is a normal convention I believe, albeit a very 'software dev' way of referring to a time window

am == ante meridiem == "before midday"
pm == post meridiem == "after midday"So you can have 12m for 12noon, and 11:59pm or 12:01am for almost midnight. Sorry, but I won't allow anything else ;-)
Posted 1 month ago # -
00:00:00 is post meridiem and 00:00:01 is ante meridiem, in your thinking here?
00:00:00 has to be ante meridiem, otherwise midday itself - 12:00:00 - becomes 'before midday' by the rule of not being allowed two 12pm-ses.
As such, 00:00 is 12am. I won't die on this hill, but I will try and push you back down it ;)

I blame the Millennium Bug

12m is 12-meridiem (noon). There’s nothing there for midnight

Let’s meet and discuss in person. Does 12am work for you ;)

Rather weirdly, the Glasgow scheme appears to have significantly more minute bundles compared to Edinburgh - even though you can use the minutes UK wide?
45/60/120 vs 30/60/120/200/300/500/1400
According to this Reddit post, the Glasgow 1400 minute bundle is just £17.99 as well! £29.99 for 300 here...

I agree with bakky. Time is a dimension and midnight being a point on the line cannot be occupied by anything with measurable time. A watch measures time and so can only ever be present in the am or pm. The fact it cannot display small enough units of measure to please Neddie is not it's fault.
I assume the 12am meeting will be somewhere a line can be draw ln in the sand.

oh don't worry, 12-midnight still exists in the time dimension, as does:
12mn == 12-media-nocte == 12-midnight
it's just ma ZX81 cannie handle it, Jim and the 12-hour watch does-nie need nae am or pm designation - it's a circle, and ye derive the noon / midnight bit by looking up...
I'll get me sundial now

Why does the Norwegian navy have barcodes on their ships?...
You'll need a Scandinavian sundial if you want to use it at 12am.

Having claimed Bluesky was free of trolling...
Cllr Stephen Jenkinson | @stephenjenkinson.bsky.social | 6hWeird Green Motion Alert Chas Booth just can’t get over the fact that I’ve done more to encourage cycling in Edinburgh in 4 months than he’s done in 40 years! A reminder that this service has been introduced at no cost and no risk to the taxpayer
Ehh... I'd be hoping nobody asks me for receipts
Chas Booth (he/him) | @chasbooth.bsky.social | 6h
Eh? I support the scheme Stephen. I just want to see the concerns addressed. In what respect is that weird?
It's not, but...
Cllr Stephen Jenkinson | @stephenjenkinson.bsky.socialI’m not convinced you do support the trial Chas, never have been.

The motion aims for a constructive dialogue with key stakeholders in order to address concerns about the scheme in order to strengthen it, for the benefit of the city. The fact that Stephen thinks this is weird tells you more about Stephen than about me, or the motion, TBH.
There is a displeasure at the existence of this motion that I have found surprising to encounter, given that it essentially chips away at the Voi black box stakeholder groups have been experiencing in favour of accountability and transparency. The concern appears to be at groups being able to interfere with or even halt the trial, which doesn't seem well-founded and is at odds with the wording of the motion (https://democracy.edinburgh.gov.uk/documents/s93362/Motion%20by%20Cllr%20Booth%20-%20Voi%20Cycle%20Hire%20Scheme.pdf)

Just the other day I was trying to search the TEC and full council minutes online to find an exchange between Cllrs Booth and Jenkinson which I think was also relayed on Bluesky in the early days after the launch when availability was abysmal, where the question "any news from VOI?" was not-answered with "we shall hear from them in the report due in X months" - I was trying to find out what the X had been, and if it would have passed yet. I'll poke through some Bluesky replies one by one when I have time.

Cllr Jenkinson clearly loves poasting drama just as much as his extremely online predecessor the Prof

Well, that seems needlessly nasty. Why try and make an issue out of a request for a meeting to see how the scheme could be further improved? Who could this possibly impress? Unless there is some untapped constituency of people who love seeing fallen over hire bikes then I have to reckon - no-one.
As an aside - the falling over is an issue for users as well as passers-by. I have hired a couple of bikes that have had a wonky pedal, obviously caused by toppling over.

I was surprised at how small the kickstand is, especially compared to the one on my Tern GSD. I'd think they could pretty easily swap them to larger ones whenever the bikes are in for maintenance. A bit wider and they'd be fine, could probably even rig some extenders similar to the GSD.

Edinburgh e-bikes extend northwest
Edinburgh's shared e-bike scheme is expanding into Stockbridge, down to Crewe Toll, and along the Hawthornvale Path towards Newhaven.
This expansion will increase the fleet to 700 e-bikes and will be accompanied by new parking locations in the expanded operational zone.
Voi will continue to work with the Council and stakeholders to consider further areas of responsible expansion.
Voi has sought input from residents on parking and has already received over 500 suggested parking locations since launching, and is working with the council to manage demand for parking responsibly.
Riders must park in the designated parking areas shown in the Voi app. The app also provides a photo of each parking location and guidance on responsible parking. Riders who do not use the designated spaces or who park improperly may receive a warning, and repeat offenders can be fined or even banned.
Transport and Environment Convener for the City of Edinburgh Council, Stephen Jenkinson, said:
“I’m delighted that we’re moving to the next phase of our excellent cycle hire scheme. The uptake figures we've recorded since launching have been groundbreaking, showing an average of over 1,000 journeys per day. We saw our highest ever single total just last week, with almost 17,000 trips recorded across seven days. The data speaks for itself in terms of the scheme's incredible popularity and success.
“We’re now reaching our original citywide target number for e-bikes, with the scheme covering large swathes of the Capital. It’s great to see people enjoying this convenient, economical, and environmentally friendly way to get around.
"Our dedication to improving our city for everyone is further underlined by our ambitious City Mobility Plan and our serious approach to tackling the climate emergency."
James Bolton, General Manager for Voi in the UK, said:
“We’re delighted that Voi has already become an integral part of Edinburgh’s sustainable transport network.
“Since launching, we’ve delivered over 185,000 journeys, travelling roughly 450,000 kilometres, the equivalent of 11 laps around the world, and replaced over 35,000 car trips.
“We’ve worked closely with the council and stakeholders to introduce parking locations that keep pavements clutter-free while offering our riders freedom.
“We’ll continue responsibly developing the scheme, in collaboration with the council, to keep Edinburgh moving.”

“
Edinburgh's shared e-bike scheme is expanding“
Know any date(s)?
Posted 3 weeks ago # -
Not live yet - and no dates in press release. I'd expect the operational side of this kind of stuff probably prohibits exact dates?
