The University's transport office Twitter account was talking about the scheme on Friday. They have apparently been looking at sites for docking stations within RIE/ BioQuarter, as well as around University residences (Pollok Halls could be an important one from that perspective). So, it will hopefully happen next year at some point.

"The three-gear bike is simple but visually smart and has all the attributes to tackle Edinburgh’s roads. Climbing the Royal Mile and The Mound was easy on the three-gear bike without me getting out of breath, surprisingly."

" Download the app for iPhone or Android (search for just eat cycles)," not working for me.. Why you wouldn't include a link if it were live is beyond me.

All I wanted today was a map which I've found on their website now anyway http://edinburghcyclehire.com/stations

Anonymized data set about all trips will be made available in the autumn

Great. I'm imagining this will be like Strava Heatmaps(?)

    That'll be interesting.

@klaxon - thanks, great to see that all the data has been properly licensed so we can use it.

For the the other OSM contributors, a few of us have been playing with using github issues to track some of the bigger stuff than needs to be done. I've created an issue to track this here:

I think there will be a rack at the Commie? There's something there that looks like a rack...

It was the perfect city for us as it has a reasonably high level of cycling already and it has the right infrastructure and culture to make this work.”

I'm stupidly excited about this. Going to change the face of citizen cycling in Edinburgh at long last. Who's going to go for a random ride on the first day? I'm going to make a trip into town (on my own bike, of course) especially!

There’s actually a dock reasonably close to both my home and work

I’ll maybe try to do a hybrid walk cycle commute for a while to really see if they’re up to the job

Looks like the support@edinburghcyclehire.com mailbox doesn't work.

    Oh...it's a Google group.

What? Did someone slip him an e-bike?

"The bikes will be available 24 hours a day all year round, including being effectively the only mode of transport on Christmas Day."

Mince. Lothian Buses run a decent service til 6pm or so.

Yes, I'm going to check that Mound thing if I ever get my backside on one of these things.

We certainly need to have a CCE outing on them. I wonder if we could achieve getting every bike out at once?

@fimm it is a rack at the Commie.

There was even a single solitary bike in it Wednesday morning. The bike was branded "YourBike" rather than "Just Eat Cycles" so presumably it was a test.

@Trixie, last I checked walking and private bikes were also modes of transport for use on Christmas day.

There's a rack at the entrance to the NEPN by the Broughton Road Tesco.

My first impression of the gearing is extremely positive with a wide range

The climbing gear is very light and probably about 7mph at my normal cadence, which is perfect.

I imagine most will want to stay in the middle gear most of the time but in a hurry or downhill the high gear feels good enough to get a move on

Where’s the nearest virtual rack to PY?

4 bikes in total active on the network right now, 2 at the Council, 1 in the station, 1 at a really obscure spot in north Edinburgh (perhaps a test / trial geofence dock)

I’m sure more will appear on Sunday ready for the launch

Nearest to PY is Bristo Square

Oh there's a stonking great bike hire docking station sited at the top of Regent Road, not far from St Andrews House.

TBH I'm somewhat conflicted about this. It's a good location in terms of the hire bike network, makes sense. The pavement is very wide there but soon won't be once the bikes are taking up half of it. Also that bit (opposite old Royal High) is pretty busy with folk in the tourism season, which is getting ever longer. So there will be some negative impact on pedestrians there.
