NOTHING to do with cycling - apart from it being the best way to visit the historic sites/sights of Edinburgh. ("He is perhaps best known for his book Illustrations of the Huttonian Theory of the Earth (1802), which summarized the work of James Hutton" - another famous Edinburgh scientist.)

He of Hutton's Section? Was taken there for a first year university Geography field trip. Add the former to the heritage ride too!

"John Playfair was a leading figure in the Scottish Enlightenment, professor of mathematics and of natural philosophy at Edinburgh University and, as the driving force behind the iconic observatory on Calton Hill, he helped establish the city as the Athens of the North."
