    the little eye hooks have me stumped. Got to be something thin/light like fishing line / thread / wool, as the bista wood things wouldn't take any weight.

    Things it could be used to wind up:
    - thread
    - wool
    - hair (eg Rapunzel)
    - CCE members

    Those who guessed wool are of course very close. It's not specifically a wool winder though, although winding wool is what it does.

    We tested it under hand crank power this afternoon and it worked, although it proved the weakness of the design of the wooden blocks on the "drive" wheel in that the tension of the wool pulled them away from the rim, because I had to chop off the rounded extensions (as seen on the "free" wheel) which were fouling the chain. I will create new blocks that slot inside the rim for strength and stability.
