No doubt this public space will be out of action for the rest of the summer, possibly into to next year, to profit some private company...

Better get used to it I'm afraid. It's been around for a couple of years I'm aware of, and seems to be pretty popular.

Andy Wightman almost got himself (or tried to get himself) arrested by trying to enter this "festival" a few years back as the relevant permissions hadn't been granted to hold a pay-to-enter event in the park.
The Foodies festival ran in the Meadows for a few years before leaving after being flooded out one very wet summer (I lost my photos but the water was nearly 2 feet deep in places).
Where were the 'Friends' who got the desire line path ripped up?
