  1. I can only imagine it is difficult maintaining services in this kind of weather, but you seem to be doing a good job. The one day snow defeated my cycling aspirations the bus ran perfectly and I still made it to work on time.

This morning on the bike I have cause to thank one of your drivers for some excellent driving. He was in charge of the No.44 (SN55 BMZ) at about 9.20 this morning, heading west along London Road past Meadowbank Stadium. I was in the bus lane and heard him behind me. The road ahead (where there are junctions to Lower London Road and Wishaw Terrace) was narrowed to one lane due to the snow. Your driver was clearly looking ahead as he slowed from overtaking me (I was in the bus lane at this point) allowing me to move over through the narrowed section. The positioning of the bus also meant that no cars could get past him (a lot of them were not as patient as your driver), I’m not sure if this was a deliberate move or not, but it was successful. He then passed me when the road widened again heading up past Marionville Road.

I leapfrogged the same bus a couple of times as he had to stop for passengers, but every time he went past it was giving a wide berth, at a sensible speed, and only if he did not have to pull in to stop immediately after going past.

I have to say that the grand majority of the time your drivers are incredibly good around bikes (in the last 6 years of cycle commuting I have only had cause to complain roughly once a year, which given the number of buses and passes is a pretty low figure) – much more so than the First Bus counterparts (one of whom this morning showed how not to go past).

I hope you can pass on the thanks to the driver responsible, and keep up the good work!

    Anthony

I was thinking that last night, LRT go every where in the city some plows on the front would keep the city nice and clear only problem i can see is if they forget they are pushing a couple of kilos of snow and pass too close.

they could toot a few times and we could pull in to let them pass and then gain a fresh clear road after them...

  6. Dear Mr Robson

Thank you for your e-mail regarding the driver of a Service 44 this morning. A copy has been forwarded to a member of management at the depot where this service operates from and they will be able to trace the driver involved and make him aware of your complimentary comments. Lothian Buses periodically displays notices in their depots highlighting the problems that cyclists encounter on a daily basis and instructions for drivers to allow for extra time and space when carrying out a manoeuvre involving a cyclist. On behalf of Lothian Buses plc may I thank you for taking the time to contact the Company regarding this incident.

    Yours sincerely

Nice one. Maybe we should all pledge to write at least 1 letter to Lothian buses complementing them the next time a driver shows us some act of kindness.

Maybe fill in this form with "Lothian Bus drivers" too.

"Were looking to find your local hero or ‘Snow Patroller’; someone who has gone beyond the call of duty to help people in your community or neighbourhood."

    Did 'we'?

    Today's good/well trained driver(s) -

Coming up from Tollcross towards Bruntsfield Links just after 5.

    Bus behind kept its distance.

Bus ahead indicates that it is about to leave bus stop. It was clear that he wasn't just going to pull out, but had seen me and was waiting to see if I would overtake - I was still downhill but going fast enough to be able to.

I slowed and moved my head to the right to indicate 'go ahead'.

Driver moves off and slides window back and briefly did a thumbs up.

I am finding them exceptional at the moment. No nonsense, and really going the extra mile to give me space etc.

I pledge to send an email this week.

Another Twitterer said that they would be more likely to use a taxi company that was 'cycle friendly'.

LRT are great on cycling. I got an excellent reply in response to my complaint about an incident in Dalkeith (see my recent rant).

    "Dear amir

I have been investigating your complaint regarding the driving standard of a xxx xxx driver on xx xxxx 2011 in Dalkeith town centre.

I was concerned with the event as described by you and have since viewed the audio/visual CCTV footage from the bus involved. The footage provided an accurate account as to what took place and clearly displayed the lack of forward planning by our driver. The driver will be interviewed with regards to his driving standard which fell below that expected by this Company. Lothian Buses place great importance on their driving staff displaying professional knowledge, awareness and skills when behind the wheel of our vehicles, which includes the rights of other road users. Lothian buses has highlighted the problems that cyclists encounter on the roads and placed information notices in their depots instructing drivers to allow for extra space and time when carrying out a manoeuvre involving a cyclist. Our drivers cannot use the size of their vehicle to intimidate other road users.

On behalf of Lothian Buses plc may I apologise for the poor level of driving displayed by a member of staff and for the upset caused, and thank you for taking the time to inform the Company of this serious matter.

    Yours sincerely

    xxx xxx

    Assistant Depot Manager"

And that's not unusual for LRT. Other companies rarely use that phrase I bet!

All road users make errors. If out of character that's one thing but sometimes this indicates (or validates) a regular problem.

"Other companies rarely use that phrase I bet"

I'm sure it's a standard sentence FOR LB.

I'm sure most of the rest is too - FOR LB.

The fact that the company takes complaints seriously and investigates them properly is beyond 'commendable' - it shows that the company is serious about the service it delivers (and makes a profit doing) AND shows up many other big companies - not just other bus ones.

It's not just about 'public relations' either. It's not just a heartwarming letter, behind it will be a bit more 'collective awareness' by LB - and particular its drivers. Any driver involved in such 'incidents' will not just be 'told off', but given appropriate extra training.

I have to say I'm impressed by Lothian Buses' approach. Good to see that publicly owned services can be efficient, responsive and progressive.

Yes, got a similar letter myself to LB when I wrote to complain and a very prompt call from the depot manager too. Never miss an opportunity to point out that LB - although not 100% perfect, 100% of the time (and who is, not I for one) - are way way ahead of other companies in their standards and their attitude and and genuinely seem concerened about and willing to do something about being even better. I happily slow down and wave a LB out in front of me.
