We mock the idea of cars being 'sentient beings' but I have long believed bicycles to be sentient. For instance, I've found that if you don't ride them for long enough they will begin to disassemble themselves.
I think it's most likely the shared bikes just upped sticks and snuck away under cover of Darkness.
